Storage + Thanks + Up

First off a big thank you to all of you for your prayers. The week ended pretty crummy + lack of sleep, but in the end I think I am realizing I need to really re-focus myself to my own business and get it back to where it can sustain me & itself full-time, as that would free me up quite well to really get out there and do stuff, vs. this job which ties me up 9 hours a day and makes me emotionally and physically exhausted – so thanks again for your prayers, and I just hope you’ll keep me lifted up and that I can let God direct my path that even if this idea to push FH/TN forward is wrong he’ll steer me towards the right goals, not just the crazy stuff I come up with in my head.

Secondly thanks to my Cousin as she agreed to go see UP with me tonight, an awesome film, and I am man enough to admit I cried twice, thankfully the theatre was dark so no one noticed :) LoL but if you get a chance be sure to check out this film it had some great comedy, doug, etc. it was a great film for Kids and Adults both, whic Pixar is always great about doing! Worth the $$ and plus I got candy & nachos! Thanks again Cousin!

Lastly is storage, I have a HUGE archive of music, photos, video, etc. As it stands the map of that is pretty spread around:

  1. iMac -> Photos + Music (Mainly iTunes not Ripped from old CD’s)
  2. Ubuntu Rig -> NFS mounts for Video Archive, Ripped Music, and Large File (ISO’s / Backups / etc)
  3. 1TB Maxtor External -> Backs up iMac but also serves as a secondary storage.

So I have been wanting to trim the fat as it were from my storage systems and make a good sized storage + use the 1TB as a backup of the “must have” section, granted I do have a set of off-site backups via BackBlaze & Dropbox, also built a small one with AmazonS3 – but trying to level it all out and leave some room for growth, so I started looking at NAS (Network Attached Storage) setups and there are a lot, from the Drobo (one of my classic favorites which has a TON of mixed reviews) to the ReadyNAS which has some great features and a fair price, but to that end there is always buying a nice RAID card for the Ubuntu Rig, and get some decent sized SATAII drives and build my own.

Each setup has it’s pro’s and con’s and a decent sized price tag, but I am looking for some business expenses that will allow me to 1) Have a good set of rite-off’s this year, but also 2) Streamline the ease of management of my data, from old customer projects for archive, to expeiments I keep for inspiration. As it stands the Synology line is one of my favorites mainly the CS407e some decent features, works with Mac – coming in 2nd but also a very strong choice is the ReadyNAS NV+, the big selling point? NFS, thus I can mount it into Linux/Mac easily, but has plenty of options for working with Windows as well – so two choices really it has come down to, the Drobo was a old favorite, but just a lot of negative press of slow speeds, fan noise, and hardware failure – one guy even noted it erased everything when he tried to replace a drive! Scary thought.

Anywhoo – with the weekend here I finally got a break which was nice, and some good sleep in today from 7am -> 1pm and 1:30pm -> 4:45pm :) So a decent sized nap if I do say so myself, for now I am off, trying to patch up something for a FH customer, and have some more reviews and NAS suggestions to look at, but I will say goodnight & have a great weekend all!
