A phrase I thought I would honestly never say that often when in regard to my day job. If you have read my blog, you know I like to solve puzzles/problems/issues – one of the reason I like hosting I think, users come with issues, script problems, server incompatiblities, etc. and it needs to be fixed, gives my overactive brain something to do than think about the strange things it thinks about – so when this problem came about at work, I was happy – we have been trying to upgrade our backend software (OLD OLD OLD DOS app) to the new snazzy Windows build that uses things like SQL, Windows, did I mention Windows and SQL yet? Yeah two things which would make a lot of the old DOS bottle necks go away.
Today I had a GREAT call with one of their Tech’s named Ben, we sorted thru some things, he got our data they WERE able to convert into the system, and discussed options – well apparently one of the main contacts with have and myself came up with more or less the same crazy idea on how to import the old data straight from the source, but Ben also had some ideas, and tomorrow we get to try them out – because while we have data converted into the system – there is a BIG BIG BIG part of the company in which we use Purchase Orders to do business, and as such that’s crucial data – sadly that is new and has no conversion process yet – but with this discussion we have a plan on how to make it happen!
So it was a fun day, discussing out ideas, getting some good back and forth, and we have a promising plan, so tomorrow I play with MSSQL a bit, taking DBF files into the magical world of SQL, should be interesting indeed – I have used MS SQL only on a few occasions, and this is a newer build than I have used before – since I deal with Linux most of the time its MySQL – which I am fairly well versed (could be better) but none the less I am prepared for the challenge and if not I have Ben & Kristine who are both prepared to help me out and get things up and running.
While it’s probably not the end of the drama with this software conversion, it at least is a step in the right direction, and hopefully – Lord willing we can get things up and running, people finding bugs/inconsistancies and get it ready to go by Jan 1 2010.
Anywhoo that was my day at work, glad to see this progressing so well, and 30% less screaming about it (based upon volume) lol. So looking forward to Friday, going to play with Wordpress 2.8 (now installed) and see what new fun it can provide me, already quite snappy – but have an amazing Friday! Take Care!
