So it’s been a week…
So this pretty piece of mac hardware has been sitting here for a week now, and what I have noticed? I am not using my PC as much again, like when I got the iBook I switched email acconts from my PC -> Mac, granted Thunderbird is not Universal yet, so it’d run in Rosetta, but I just as easily converted FH email -> Mail.app.
I think with Mac one thing I know, is less distraction - in Windows you have things pulling your attention every-which-way, but in Mac, it tends to be you choose the point of focus - but don’t get me wrong, I still stand behind my view of every type of computer has it’s place - in the room now the Linux box is webserver/mt-daapd/ssh server - the Windows box/laptop are Vongo, Email, Games - and the Mac, is video, photography, and soon virtual photo processing center - digital negatives here I come!
So the age old question… What’s on your Mac? Well let’s cover some of the fun stuff:
Growl - Great system for on-screen notifications, like current iTunes song playing, Files Uploaded, Who’s just come online.
AdiumX - The best Multi-Network IM app - great for chatting across AIM/MSN/Yahoo/ICQ/Google
AppZapper - Easiest un-installer for Mac - now, some folks will say “Just drag it to the trash!” - the answer is simple, left-overs - that removes the application, not settings, not various hidden files that get created when you add the app.
iSquint - iPod Video Maker, so if I ever get a video iPod (all I got back was a store credit) - I need to convert vids.
Missing Sync - Needed a easy way to sync my Treo 650 to the various Mac apps - so my PC & my Mac are both up to date with what I’m up to.
Quicksilver - Must have, hands down the best tool I wish the windows devlopers would figure out! I’m a keyboard man, on windows I can navigate without a mouse, this gives me some of that freedom.
SubEthaEdit - Great code editor, works with Transmit - does wonders!
Transmit - The FTP of FTP apps, sure sure there is Cyberduck, and I have donated to Cyberduck, but Transmit just has some great features, and a fair price.
Vienna - RSS Reader - nuff said
VirtueDesktops - Virtual Desktop support, I mean why clutter everything on one desktop? Have 4 - it’s free, its beta, but it works.
VLC - The best of the best, video in full screen - no Quicktime Pro needed
But that’s the core, above and beyond iLife - its good stuff - but that’s my Mac, it’s doing the job, and by Friday if all goes well two things will happen: #1 - 2GB of Ram (maxing it out!) and #2 - A photo printer - but even still I am simplifying things - going to eliminate 1 LCD (switch it with my old CRT my rents have) - and soon I am going to get a nice long wire for the to the closet, and re-locate the linux box. Clean up the computer workstation area a tad better.
Anywhoo - if any of these apps intrest you, either Google, orleave a comment and I’ll get you linkage - but for now, I am going to go back to Mr. Holland’s Opus, have a good evenin all.
