So I have been toying with Ruby as a “mellow” thing to do, granted I am still working on some PHP 4.x apps I have written over the last few years, but armed with Agile Web Development with Rails - a mellow read, but some good documentation and examples, plus with the development happening on the iMac it’s very smooth to edit, see results, and debug as needed.
I love one of the original code demos they show in the box regarding database interaction - it’s like 60+ lines of code for some interaction with a database, then enter the Ruby version, maybe 15 tops. That is simplified code to say the least, now granted there are some configs you must edit within the base app, but that’s a 1 time edit, I know in PHP with classes, and such you can simplify calls, but this is out of the box, no digging up old code, old functions and classes to bring back that functionality.
I am still trying to wrap my head around some of the simple things, just because in the realm of coding I have always had to do it a tad more code heavy, so going from a ton of calls, it’s now like 4 so re-arranging my mind around the simplicity of it all.
The first thing I am going to be working on is a cart that interacts with Google Checkout, kind of a project to help Awaken, but also because the logic in my head for the cart matches what I can do in Ruby, and probably fairly quickly - then leaves the only trick, Ruby on Rails + cPanel Already in testing on a dev server, so it may be yet possible. Well, Mr. Sherman has requested my presence, so I am going to go forth, and hang for a bit. Night folks.
Well yesterday started early, and ended late. A early morning ride, which was much needed with some recent server/client issues, a good escape/release - but then followed up with a semi-busy morning working on deployment of Ruby on Rails - fun stuff - even bought a book, which I have to find (I think it is in my trunk) but the day quickly seemed to move on and low and behold it was photo shoot time! (Yay!)
Must say some fun shots, we didn’t have the turn out that was expected, some mis-communications, and one guy was “napping” as I think his myspace comment noted but none the less with the crew that came (Mary, Matt, Mike, Alan (I think that was his name) and Sara) it gave us some good shooting options, but I think I am going to scout out a few new places between now and next week, but I think I may also be getting a new car very soon - vs. much later - got my renewal for my tags on my Neon, and again I must smog my Neon, it’d probably pass, but I think it’s just time. Granted finances aren’t entirely ready, but I think it is something I really need as the Neon has seen better days, but is getting worse.
Anywhoo - day wrapped up good yesterday, and now it’s Thursday, which is crazy, but moving forward, working on issues, and getting work done after a good mornin ride with Ms. Rosie. So off to work, and maybe some evening fun with Ruby on Rails
I have been throwing around the idea once again, priced a new server setup for under $1000, 500GB of storage, 2GB of ram, 64-bit processor (though probably in non-64 Linux mode yet) but all in all it’d be a nice piece of fun - and it’d allow me to move all friends and freebies to the server, plus it’d give me a playground for things like deployment of Ruby, SQL variants, and various other things to tinker with
But the real question is who would contribute to the fun? I mean friend wise you’d all get essientally unlimited storage/bandwidth/resources in exchange, but the outlay would be about $1100 (possibly less depending on hardware deals) most server software I can get on a monthly lease, and write off as business costs (as I’ll be tinkering to reflect things on other servers) - but of all my friend style accounts, who could/would kick down some cold hard cash? Feel free to email/comment if your up for the donating fun
Well Friday after a LONG Thursday dealing with a server (which PTL was good for getting a few things in motion for repairs) - but Friday I was draggin all day, with only a single major task to do - which was meet a installer @ 2pm at the office, for the 4th T1 line to be added to the system (we had 3 binded T1’s - now 4 - kinda) but the installer was held up for some reason or something, so I was there from 2pm->5pm - but this installer is a good guy, he’s come before, and he is human. In other words he can hold a conversation, and has been in the biz for a while, so we told stories of old Dial-Up days when we both worked at Dial-Up ISP’s but all things said and done, the T1 was “setup” but it seems it’s not fully configured, and since it was 5pm on Friday, I instead of fight to have someone “MAKE THIS RIGHT NOW!” told the guy to have a good weekend, and I too went home.
Saturday led into a birthday party with a blonde child - pictures of the festivities are on my flickr account - got a good set of shots but after that it was back to sleep, until a phone call, which woke me up was this guy we’ll call “Adam” calling with Mac questions, as he got a job at the local paper so got to chit-chat mac with him a bit and hopefully get him squared away, but then I crashed again, slept till noon on Sunday, and then crashed again this afternoon, but I think I am nearly caught up, but time will tell as I am going riding with Rosie in the morning - which I think will do me good - I have been needing a ride.
But this week is shaping up - Photoshoot on Wednesday, possible lunch/dinner with Scott and the boys on Tuesday or Friday - but we shall see who has what free - tomorrow after the ride and dropping off Rosie, I am going to the gym (no not that crazy) they are having problems with their wifi, which may mean their wireless router is truly dying (which is my guess) so going to have to check and see if I can get it rolling again, if not, Officemax opens at 10, snag a new router for them if they have something cheap, if not get something ordered ASAP.
So a busy week shaping up, and I am hoping no other major distractions to hold me up in getting FH finished, and online - so hopefully tomorrow — er I guess now today, goes smoothly, and everything gets back up and running smoothly, quickly and painilessly. Until next time - thanks for the prayers, take care & goodnight.
Another server under attack today - someone spoofed a client’s email address, so now not by choice mail servers all over the world are essientally pounding the server like mad, craziness. So I guess so much for sleeping 12 hours till I have to be downtown, maybe I’ll just stay awake till then, or go down at noon and take a nap for 2 hours - what a morning - but this does identify the second half of an issue folks were reporting… about that roadtrip/vacation? feel free to buzz me on IM - its gonna be a late one.
Update:Server upgrades have gone fine, removed the MX records of the trouble domain, and that’s got mail from the blast slowing down to a trickle - ran some updates - things are looking better, still not perfect, but almost good enough to get some sleep for a while - probably around 4am or so - ah sweet sleep. Thanks for the prayers.
What a week, as I start writing this, its 2 minutes till tomorrow - which is nice, Friday got here quickly, and I can safely say I am glad, crazy week, servers out at the office, temp’s at the office out of control, servers having DNS attacked, and lots of little thing that added up to big things, but its easing off.
Some updates though, Rosie got the job, then the day after she lost the job (still not sure why) - haven’t been able to get ahold of her, me and Courtney both tried with no luck, but as the Cuz says she probably just needs some time, so trying to give it, but won’t stop me for prayin for her
I am doing alright, myself, tired, busy, nuts, but good - finances are leveling out some, and hopefully if I can get FH done, and some new customers/sales in, lot of features have been a long time coming, testing, tweaking, watching what a server can handle - but its all looking good.
Fun next week even though its kinda work like - photo shoot with the Awaken crew, new shirts, new folks for the shoot, and maybe new locations, so a nice chance to get out and take some shots, plus with the new filters, should get some cleaner shots - so pretty excited, going to probably order a memory card, or one of these portable dump drives as I am going to call them, basically a laptop hard drive, that has a card reader attached, so 30GB drive + enclosure, and I can keep dumping my 1GB card - could almost shoot the entire thing in JPG+RAW - which would be fun for adjusting exposures and such a tad more hard core, but at the same time I’d need to probably get a 2GB card as well, so I could take more shots between card dumps.
It’s safe to say though, I really miss being in school, vacations were nice but I think if the budget works out, and I can wing it, I am going to get a new car, save for 2 months, and hit the road in the fall on my road trip - I pray I can do it, I think I really need it. But now I need to sit here and listen to this playlist over and over. Night Folks.
