Keep getting orders…

While I do love getting new hosting orders (got 2 so far this month! so far a good 2006!) - I have been getting random CafePress.com orders, of which some gear I haven’t even looked at in years!

So I figure, why not, here’s the gear:

http://www.cafepress.com/cmcentral_com
http://www.cafepress.com/freshreleases
http://www.cafepress.com/cmc_addict
http://www.cafepress.com/cmcwombat
http://www.cafepress.com/frontallobe
http://www.cafepress.com/lsgf

Some of the designs are website specific, some are things I made YEARS ago that have just been sitting in my shop, once things cool down maybe I’ll throw a few more together… who knows - I just know I find myself lately missing my artsy talents (piano, singing, design, etc) - durn computers. :)

Backups, Treos, Vacations

Welcome to the halfway point. Wednesday. How much work have I done on client projects thus far? Honestly? About an hour for one, but it wasn’t major, plus it helped me with one of the things I have been relaxing doing - the joys of working on personal projects vs. someone elses - don’t get me wrong, I love working on Client things, service enhancements, software tweaks and features for websites, but it has been ages since I really sat down and actually poked at one of my projects.

Backups is one of the things I had been wanting to work on, as my home system didn’t have a ‘perfect’ backup solution, but for $8 a month I am trying out a service which thus far I am loving being on Linux to use - rsync to the web, currently rsyncing over ssh -> backup service - wrote a tiny backup script in bash to automate it a bit, but it’s syncing up thunderbird right now, going to set it to do maybe every other night backups - but it also syncs up my Docs from my linux box, and a drop box folder I made, so if I need access to something at work/on the road, it’ll be in the web interface, but more detailed info on this service in a future post.

Treo650… oh how I hate thee. I figured if I was longing for this device, before I shelled out a ton of cash, the least I could do is give it a whirl, so seeing as one of the few providers who carry it is Cingular I called the shop next to my gym to see if they had a demo in stock I could come preview - sure enough the nice lady said they did - went in and checked it out, such a awesome little unit, it is indeed little - but such a good feel in the hand, not too bulky like my brother’s new iPaq Smartphone - all the PalmOS greatness I have come to know and love, plus camera phone, bluetooth - so I’d be set for a lot of goodies, while I still wish Palm offered a hybrid 802.x/memory sd card, for now the GPRS/BT will allow me to do some basic stuff. Come the 18th I find out if I earn $25 a head for the 35 user (soon to be 40) referal of my brother’s work’s cells to T-Mobile, $800+ credit would easily allow me to justify getting the Treo650 from the link below, but then also sell the V551 (Unlocked GSM) and the Tungsten T3 (sexy pda).

Vacation is going well thus far, I did goto the office yesterday, faster upstream than home (2.3mpbs up/down), centrally located in town (aka downtown), and to top of it with the kicker, AC (it was 104F yesterday) so it was nice to hide out, and I did spend time browsing playing with code for this project I am working on for me, made some good headway, but so far my vacation away from Client projects is going well. Today I think I may even go to denny’s for breakfast, biscuts and gravy have been calling my name :)

Anywhoo - If anyone has any desire to donate a couple bucks to the Treo 650 fund, that would be awesome - as always not required, don’t feel obligated at all - just if you have the desire to you can use the following PayPal donation option:

Gotta Love Freeloader Friday!

I have been a reader of MacMerc.com for a while now - today’s “Freeloader Friday Download of the Week: Poor Mans Creative Suite” is definately a great selection of apps, I have used all but Nvu & SeaShore - so tonight’s iBook time will definately include a download or two for some testing ;)

If your a Apple user, definately consider adding MacMerc.com to your favorites, a very handy site.

Before I go, soon I’ll have my bookmarks shared here - I gave in and started using del.icio.us and it is very handy specially with Foxylicious in Firefox, now my iBook, Linux Box, Windows Box all share my bookmarks in firefox, definately very very handy. I do need to clean up my tags a bit though, the dropdown list is a mile long ;) If your interested in my current bookmarks you can look at my del.icio.us - service is free - but I’d be willing to donate some $$$ if I had some to spare, definately very helpful having 3 computers with different operating systems.

Okay - back to ampin down from the gym. More later :)

Fewer Clicks

A good bulk of the blogs I check daily are ones I must view the websites, but a nice bulk are ones I login to NewsFire and I get all the latest and greatest ad-free, simple, and ready to go for quick reading and since it caches articles, I can take it with me on the iBook.

http://www.xanga.com/rss.aspx?user=YourNameHere

Xanga, the popular blog spot for some does have RSS feeds! (Yay!) Which means I can pull content off sites remotely, and now all the blogs I read are nicely tucked away within the iBook, the last 5 posts you have made are displayed in your RSS feed, which is very very handy. If you are a Mac user and want to keep up on Xanga blogs, Snag NewsFire, its free, its quick, and easy to use, if your a PC user, I never did find a RSS reader out there I REALLY liked, but there are a lot out there so look around and find one that fits your tastes.

Save yourself some clicks, get the latest delivered to you in RSS form!

iPhoto for PC?

Not exactly, but some of the same functionality as Mac users enjoy on a PC platform in the form of Google’s new offering Picasa – this free program allows you to search your computer for photo’s and orgainze them.

I have yet to try the Digital camera route, but soon I am going to see if it too bears the iPhoto functionality of starting up when a digital camera gets connected. System requirements arent too beefy either:

  1. Personal computer with 300MHz Pentium® processor and MMX® technology.
  2. 64 MB RAM (128MB recommended).
  3. 50 MB available hard disk space.
  4. 800×600 pixels, 16 bit color monitor.
  5. Microsoft® Windows 98, Microsoft® Windows Me, Microsoft® Windows 2000, or Microsoft® Windows XP.
  6. Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5.01 (6.0 recommended). If at any time you get an “unable to authenticate” error, you should upgrade to IE 6.0.
  7. Microsoft® DirectX 7.0 or higher (8.1 ships with XP, 9.0b recommended).
  8. Optional: 56K Internet connection speed (for access to any online services and picture sharing via Hello).
  9. Works with JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, PSD, AVI, MPG, ASF, and WMV files

I dunno if I will use this on the PC full time, but since my iBook keeps seeming to fill up (should of gotten a bigger drive) I may move all my photos off as a space saver, probably need to archive my mail as well, that’d probably help. Ah the joys of computers.

Oh and the above software for anyone who is not photo editing saavy – does some great features for basic edits, removes red-eye for starters, but also Cropping, Rotating, Enhancing – some great simple things but for the average user without knowledge of advanced photo software or no photo editing software in general, for a freebie, a nice set of features. Give Picasa a whirl.

taking a bite out of spam…

spam is the irritation most people have now days – because you have the problem if you turn up your filtering toooo high, you hit the issue where your buddy gets marked as spam – so its a pain in the rear! Enter my favorite dog…

Robin Keir’s K9 – its a free application which should work with just about any POP3 email app – so for my servers its going to be a definate push to my users and then proceed to turn filters down a bit so more email can flow in – but this one you do have to do foot work on, but compared to loosing that important email … a major plus. I have it now setup on my Parent’s PC and it has now thwarted 4 attempts to steal my dad’s eBay info because it finds the bad header info. So very cool to say the least!

Next phase of spam control is a 3rd party filtering / virus scanning all mail before it gets to me – found one company and my brother was looking into the possiblities but with his increased workload as of late both in Personal and Business life, its going to hit my plate soon. So thats a definate possiblity – however that does make a cost per email account to me for filtering/scanning – but if I can get a few more sign-ups / make it a option for virus / spam filtering and tack on enough to cover each style of package – life is good.

So thats my rant for this afternoon as I am cooling down – have some coding to do this evening and some rest to do in about 30 as I go on break.. but for now im cooling down, working on trouble tickets etc.
