People + AOL? vs M$

Spam. You hate it - I hate it, though that one guy at CompUSA seems to love it, and worms - but that is another story. In a recent post at BetaNews it appears AOL has said the same thing most have said to Microsoft’s SENDER ID idea, the reponse “Shove it up your ZIF Socket!” (bad computer joke).

AOL however has joined a lot of system admins (including myself) who are behind the new SPF method for preventing spoofs and other forged types of headers from email, you know those ones where you get it from yourself? I hate those, also prevents people from sending them as you in the case of viruses and worms.

For those wanting more information on SPF and what it does (most likely just sysadmins) you can read more on SPF by visiting their website [ go here ] - this is coming up with a lot of cPanel users as well, so hopefully soon this will be a ironed out process - I have a server coming online soon which will give it a whirl in a minor test enviroment - so hopefully it deploys nicely.

More posts coming later today.

downtime..

Anyone who hosts with me and is on server 1 (sputnik) you will probably by now note that the server is offline. More info on the why – but please know your sites are being moved to the secondary server now and being brought online as soon as possible – just some networking stuff to work out with migrating IP addresses etc.

I’ll post more news tonight after the day’s work and catchup of other projects.

death to shoutbox…

Hackers. They are one of those things that give you two feelings (at least me).

1) The wish I could even fathom some of their magic tricks into cracking open a server.

2) Wish they could attack someone elses box ;)

Shoutbox 2.32 and lower all had some funky funky glitch where essientally you could pass command line options to linux and do fun things like wget tools to exploit command line access. So far it looks like I have caught it early but I am tweaking all shoutboxes till time is such where I can easily access things again without fear of another attack (man needs his sleep).

But other than that – server health good. Need to get my 2nd server back up and runing (apollo) and make it into a blog box or something spiffy ;)

Happy Palm Under Construction!

Currently I am in the process of converting HappyPalm, it re-gained my attention when it earned me $40 in a check for advertising the other day from one of my old advertising links. So at some level the site is still alive, making money, and paying for itself every year.

So now its the big move to MoveableType as the backend, no MySQL to rely on—the MySQL server on this box is getting lagged lately, looking to move some of my heavy MySQL users (PHP-Nuke & Blog) sites to another server to help lighten the load on this server, just saving up the funds.

Also considering a straight linux box on a DS3 .. found a deal for $99 / $39 setup which is a awesome plan, after I figure out what I am doing with this whole speeding ticket thing, I may get it. Why? Oh the bandwidth of it all. I want to put up some files for HappyPalm I have had lying around, and also for backup of core files I need when out and about, that I dont wanna muck up my laptop with ;-)

So lots of work for this Saturday! Still have to write a ‘Invoice Reminder’ for all those clients who havent paid their online invoices. All in a days work ;)
