So things are leveling out, things are getting better and changes are happening - one happened without much REAL planning, on the matter of “construction” my employers @ my day job are quick to move forward - thus today I did not have a office. They started work on taking out the wall between the old workout room, and my office, thus I had to re-locate. The issue was no one considered the servers - when dealing with Drywall there is a LOT of dust, so with the help of a friend from AR and my weak but workable arms, I relocated hardware to a cubicle down the way from my office.
The good news is this is all going to be DONE tomorrow, they nearly finished it today, but just not all the way, so things are going to wrap up tomorrow, and I’ll get a desk back, and after work I’ll re-locate servers back and in time get them racked up and off the floor and the silly stands.
But that leads to the big question on my heart lately, in a year, do I keep the day job? or do I go back to the joys of keeping my own hours, fighting for work, etc. - or do I stick around, or is there some other balance I can achieve? I just miss the ability to relax, heal up, this was the first time I recall being this sick for this long - granted I have healthcare now in which I can go get poked and prodded… but I think a lot of it is stress/exposure to sick folks on a more regular basis.
Feb 2009 is my big call time, unless something happens sooner than later to the job/position which doesn’t fit - but if nothing else I may see if we can wing a better hour setup come a year, something that gives me a lot more flexibility and reduction of stress from the politics and plain insanity of the office and I know in most jobs/positions that’ll never be gone 100% - but at this point my health, sanity, and budget are big factors in things, but who knows come 2009, I may have a new direction I never considered.
Anywhoo - that’s the random bits on my mind tonight, going to go and take the laptop and toy with a website or two (including FH/TN!) then some upgrades are on the books… so we’ll see what happens! Night all!
Okay okay - odd title, but it’s the Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog Soundtrack I just snagged from iTunes - a nice addition to the flick, I hope ol JW decides to make a few more episodes if not make it a regular thing - but a nice thing to listen to as I finish up the day off
A interesting “day-off” which for me included working around here on things - put up a few things, tried out my oven - I need to find the scissors though as I can’t cut the shelf paper without em, probably borrow my pair from work as I don’t use it there that often, but at least it’ll hold me off from going to Target again, and blowing a lot more money lol.
I think I have my security system sorted, probably be in this next Friday or so - but around here the nighborhood has been quiet and mellow, the ocasional group of kids yelling at the pool, but not a big deal, heck even my upstairs neighbors making a racket today didn’t even bother me, as they are moving out but its all coming together to be lovely, maybe week after next have folks over for a house/apartment warming (depending on what they want to call it).
Sent off my current logo to two of my buddies tonight, looking to have the Thrust Networks logo re-done, I made the one in use over 10 years ago, and it could use a fresh touch just like FlockHosting got a while back - but I’d really love to see what my friends can do as they are both insanely gifted artists - and I bet they can come up with something original/fresh/clean - but with that I think I’ll be able to get a fresh site ready for TN and I am going to start working this week on FH’s refresh to include some new packages/functions/features/etc.
Anywhoo - going to finish up my day and get a hearty 6 hours sleep before I start back to work, been a nice 4.5 days off, but sadly things must go back to the lovely grind, but hopefully a night’s rest helps me be fresh and ready for the challenges of day! Night all! Have a GREAT Tuesday!
Last night I got some good sleep in finally, it’s my bed. I need a new one, this one is dead and then some, but I need to figure out my bedroom first, or figure out if I am getting an apartment or waiting to see if the rents find a new house again or not - so not sure, but I slept on the couch, and got a LOT of sleep, and woke up feeling good vs. dragging to the shower then getting to work even more sleepy.
Today was fun - got another foot in the door to virtualizing desktops, so we’ll see what happens there - but one funny thing is I handed out some Peppermint Patties I had from my snack drawer, and one person more or less questioned me if they were poisoned lol. She’s not always friendly to me, so I think she wondered if I was trying to get even lol - but in the end she ate it and said thanks.
Anywhoo - 10m left, the Windows Virtual is still chugging away at 7zip’n the MLS backup, my Linux workstation finished it a bit ago, and it’s already off-site, but it’s 100% scripted, but once that’s finished, I am off to home, possibly to see a kid and his Wii - but for now I’ll say “Have a Good Thursday!” and maybe a blog to follow tomorrow… more to talk about I’m sure…. lots going on, and after tomorrow’s meetings more stuff to talk about. Tonight was much needed. Nephews, Niece, Dan, Val, Solomon, etc. a nice end to my day, which ended previously after work by being ditched for a meeting setup Monday, and then having my friend insulted as well as myself, basically told that I was a complete idiot as well as Dan who had no skills what-so-ever - not a fun thing in the least, I brought it up to Dan before the night started because it really bothered me and I didn’t want to let my friend be bad mouthed by this kid who has had very little experience in the world of Web Dev. basically call myself and Dan noobs - kindly told him to shut it - got Dan a little riled up as well - and rightly so.
The part that sucks and has me torn of course is A) I do business with this company. B) The owner and I have know each other for years, and C) $500 a month is nice when I get it, before the following month - so a tad frustrated already with the entire thing, then throw this on the fire - kinda just leaves me wanting to just walk away. As much as $500 would be handy, and the occasional 3-500 more for side work is nice, it’s still not my standard rates, and it’s still not getting paid on time so needless to say I am seriously praying the idea of just cutting ties, one less thing to worry about, and focus strictly on other side projects and jobs which pay me up-front, on-time, and what was agreed upon, plus I don’t have to deal with the drama of it all.
So thankfully this is all going down of course during the week my boss is gone @ my day job, and gives me some time to toy with it some more, but I honestly don’t know what I want to do, possibility of $800 extra a month on average is nice, but like so many if I have to wait over a month for even the local guy to pay me, it’s not helpful, and I spend more time chasing after the local boy than I do chasing after the guy on the east coast who owes me $5 for a month, $5 is simple, $800 is a car, insurance, and credit card payment! So big difference.
Anywhoo - if your reading this sir, and you know who you are, shoot me an email when your around, we need to chat a bit, or setup a time to discuss what’s going on, and get some level of resolution - but to everyone reading this, keep me in your prayers - busy busy, lots going on, still no speeding ticket stuff, and still haven’t had a chance to push my 9-to-6 concept…. so prayers are appreciated, but for now I am going to go talk to my pillow. Soooooooo… how you all doing? This is the “its late, so brief blog” version of things, so here we go….
Backup at work is up and running, in the end with fakeraid I went with dmraid + RAID0 - so no real failure option, but at the same time, going to archive per-user to bzip and such sans media (personal mp3 files) and it’ll all be good, but it’s a rockin system, doing well.
Bowling - we have made it a weekly thing it looks like, as we are going Thursday night, but none the less bowling, so I’ll get to see if I can improve my game any from last week’s cosmic bowling. Crazy Girls in the lane next to us… long story.
Stargate - Ark of Truth is out, loved it. Bought it @ Target watched half of it at work while working on the backup server, but finished it @ home, rip’d it to Xvid for watching on-demand on the TV as well as a copy for the iPod… yes I love Stargate, I have all 10 seasons of SG1, and all of Atlantis. Good stuff indeed.
Shirts - got a few new ones, one came today, mainly artsy, also got one of a pigeon that says “I’m from the streets” looks cool, but I do need to do some laundry this weekend and get things ready, plus I need to find some clothes for Church and singing in the choir, may need to venture out to the GAP as their shorts/pants tend to fit me good.
Anywhoo… there it is, I am sure there is something I am leaving out, still waiting on my ticket, got to meet Solomon Poon, etc. etc. BUT it is time to goto bed soon, so I must wrap up, set out clothes for the AM, and get to it - bi-weekly meeting tomorrow, and more folks to get setup on the backup server. Soooo where has the time gone? A week ago I was having a mixed day, getting speeding tickets, stressed out of my mind, and here we are a week later, and where am I? A little older, a little wiser, and a little less stress!
This week I have gotten a lot accomplished, ordered the Laptop plan for the boss man, got GoToMyPc installed on his Home rig, I can get on and work on it from here! Whoohoo! I’ve setup a laptop, I’ve apparently gone the speed limit as I have no more tickets this week and I just bought a $1,800 server that will give us 1.5TB of backup storage, in Raid5 setup, all SATAII with 16MB cache on the drives, a nice dual core with 4GB of ram, it looks lovely, plus I’ll have a SSH machine now at work! Woohoo!
So a lot has gone down, went and sung at the Church Choir practice for easter @ UB, twas fun, also had a birthday party at the lake, low turn-out, but good friends and family were there, so even with small numbers, it was fun (Long Live Pine!) - Sleeping a lot more lately, I think the ol body is starting to get the hang of things, and tonight I get to finally meet Mr. Solomon Poon! Da Baby! So I am pretty jazzed.
So another week down, and I need to start on my taxes this weekend, as it’s a few weeks earlier than normal, BUT since I don’t have the luxury of sitting up all night as usual, I need to get started on em now to get a good head start and have the ready to go.
Anywhoo - that’s about it, busy busy busy, fun, busy busy busy, fun, sleep, busy busy - my average day but it’s all good, keep me in your prayers, lots more stress on the way I am sure with this backup server, you spend nearly 2k on hardware it will need to work So that’s my plan, make it work, for now though, only 30m or so before Niki calls me to do the Cougar backup, so I am going to work some more on this excel export VisualFox Pro script and see if I can’t make it sing. You know it’s friday when your day makes the progression of the title today. What started off as a fair day, some minor blips, but nothing major, got things rolling, got around, got things lined up for a time-table of fun, but then after lunch things went down-hill, server ate it, find out all these end of month things as they happen, well except one - just insane.
So after that, I am driving home, as I am coming in the home stretch, a CHP pulls up and tailgates me with no lights on, so I move out of his way, then he suddenly gets behind me again, and lights up his lights and pulls me over - what was casual speed of traffic driving is suddenly 20 over (85 in a 65) - blah! Of course since I have no priors in over 18 months (more like 4 years) I am up for Traffic School (just like last time) - part of me wants to contest it, but again I just don’t want to 1 wake up for court that early to have a judge say “Sorry kiddo” and Two - I just want to clear it, point be gone with traffic school and move on, I have only had 1 other ticket ever, granted I have had a major accident once, but even that was over 6+ years ago? I dunno, long day, brain is tired.
So there it is, I could rant some more, but honestly - this day just needs to be put to bed, I’d considered going to see Solomon, but I think I am going to hold off as I don’t know if I am just tired, or fighting a bit of a cold myself, so better safe than sorry - Solomon isn’t going anywhere (unless Dan and Val are planning on leaving the country) so for now I am going to work on some EE code, was going to move it during my lunch break, but that didn’t happen with all my fun insanity today - continued prayers are still greatly appreciated, still finding all the balance in this job, my business, and downtime for myself.
