Taking matters into my own hands… er hand.

Well I have gone and done it, I snagged a 80gb iPod “Classic” - I weighed the pro’s and con’s in my head, and in the end it really just will be fine, no use in going back to the last get, going to use my change jar to get the TV cable when it comes out, but it is nice to be able to watch video and such now - plus the new UI bits are nice too, heck even came with 3 free games - so a full review of my takes on it in a few days.

All in all a good day today, got the ball rolling on a few things, some new job bits pop’d up over night, so work :) at least I’ll have tunes to enjoy while working and can leave my evil master “iTunes” and save 25% CPU & 25MB ram ;) - anywhoo back to watching House! Have a Good Night Folks!

Friday? Woah!

Hard to believe at some level that it is friday. Crazy! But the week has drawn to a close, I just got done pushing some fixes to about 12 servers - got my usual pile of integrity checks shortly there after (few RPM upgrades) - all in all thought it went smoothly, and Apache2 support is nearing as well - so looking forward to that, and slowly migrating things to PHP5 as there is a wider support net for it.

Launched the pre-registration for a client website, some minor blips I didn’t care too much for, but I smoothed a few out, and I am working on the production sign-up form using a bit of jQuery magic -or- possibly LiveValidation - both offer some good form management, but on the jQuery end overall I can do a lot more with data for the site’s listings - I’ll give a full run down of the site and linkage once it’s production, heck I may ask for a few brave beta testers to help out, but all in due time.

Anywhoo - need to go clear my two servers from the office out of the living room, then I will either watch Monk or simply walk to the bed, and pass out… both sound enjoyable ;) so time will tell. Have a Good Weekend Folks.

Awake? Yup.

Well I just couldn’t stop, and in about 6 hours I have a meeting, LoL - I was up most of the night reading the 2nd book (363 page) finished it.. good stuff. Now if only I can get some sleep before this lunch meeting, that would be a good thing ;)

366 pages of paper.

Been a while since I have read a book for fun, granted there are code manuals, sites online I brush up on new things with, but to actually enjoy a book? Been a while. My book of choice was on I had read before, but it’s a power, well written book. Operation Firebrand. It is a 3 novel series, and I own all three, so 1 down, 2 to go ;)

Nice to relax away from the console, just like watching the meteor shower the other night, a nice change of pace - lots of things are on the horizon, change of location, change of jobs (sorta) lots of change, and thankfully I am remembering to unwind again, which for me, isn’t something I can usually do - amping down after a high-stress/anxiety bit is still not the easiest thing for me.

Anywhoo, being it’s 430am and I am awake, going to check in on backups, then I think I am going to aim for one of the following:

  1. Back to Sleep
  2. Start Book #2
  3. Take a Shower

So I will say farewell, have a great Wednesday!

Pownce vs. Twitter

Social Party. Lately thats what it feels like online, social bookmarks, social networking, social music (go Zune!), and of course the bit growing with some steam Social Notes (or so I call it) - a small site called Twitter picked up steam asking the question “What are you doing?” originally starting as a status app so to speak, you could tell folks “doing my laundry, out of fresh underwear” - people posted things, some things they shouldn’t have ;)

So things have evolved - and folks now really just sort of Micro-blog I suppose, but really it tends to be a Note they are sending out like Post-It’s on acid, with a world wide audience, the system has grown, and a newer player has entered the arena, named Pownce which is invite only right now - but it comes to the table with features that Twitter hasn’t got, but at the same time, that doesn’t rule Twitter out.

The Client

Pownce offers a client with their system, using Adobe Air to package the app, it is available for Mac and Windows respectively:

Pownce Client

And of course, since Twitter has a current open API, there are an assortment of clients for both Mac/Windows/Linux, I use Twitterrific:

Twitterrific (OSX)

The Victor: Twitter - with a open-api, which is forthcoming with Pownce, this may change, but as it stands now you have more variety with Twitter, and an assortment of Applications for both your desktop & website to integrate with.

The Website

By far Twitter has gone the simplistic route, with users really pushing forward with features like using the format “@username” to reply to Tweets, the site has evolved over time, but for the most part, it is simplistic in nature, as it only has one question to ask:

Twitter Website

Pownce is the hype of “web 2.0″ and then some, but it has more beef to include, it throws in a extra features like Send Events, Send Link, Send Message and the Send File (10mb free, 100mb pro membership) - so they’ve spiced it up a notch:

Pownce Website

The Victor: Pownce - With extra organization, they have added message groups, different styles of alerts, and a nice system of reply/communication.

The Update Methods

Having already covered the clients above, the biggest factor left is of course use of a API, Twitter has hands down got this corner covered, with companies like Woot, Dell, and various other Blogs/Events using Twitter for “live-ish” coverage of sales, events, postings on a main site, it has opened the door for content systems to really interact with another community without even trying hard.

Secondly Twitter has their SMS gateway as well as Mobile page to get your Tweet on while on the go.

The Victor: Twitter.

Overall Winner

Twitter is the more robust in overall features, mainly due to their API and existing community including Musicians, Actors/Actresses, famous nerds, etc. but Pownce has some features which if smoothed out a bit, and other functionality + API was added, would quickly surpass the functionality of Twitter.

For me, my day-to-day short of the occasional banter with Jake, is Twitter, but I say keep your eyes on Pownce, one that API opens up, I imagine you’ll see a few black-out days on their site as they have to adjust to new load from visitors, buy them pro memberships now ;)

Sick? Me? Nevah.

Well yesterday was funny, had a list of things to do, was sort of well rested, then suddenly I felt the need to goto sleep, was just really tired around 2, and I went for a “nap” and woke up to pain, which proceeded to a need to goto the bathroom, after that I moved around a bit, only to return to bed, and sleep another 8 hours, and thus I woke up an hour or so ago, still a tad achy and shooting pain in my head, but thoughts clearer than they have been in 2 days.

So I got my todo pile done in record time, got things tuned up for a few customers, cleared a site which had been hacked and was doing a spoof bank site, customer is going to start from scratch, was very sorry for the trouble he felt he caused, while I could complain that he should of kept his programs up to date, he gave me no rude comments, was very happy to work with my suggestions, was ready to go when I was, every step of the way asked if he could help in any way - just awesome.

Anywhoo - I could write a bit more, but I think I am either going to go find something easy for breakfast, take a hot bath, or try to go back to sleep - CS3 get’s here Friday, so pretty pumped about that, need to check in with the client about the proof I sent to her on Monday, and need to get a migration price/plan sent to a server customer. So a busy day ahead, have a good one folks!

Server Down?

Well I got an email tonight that the server was down, checked my phone to see if I somehow magically missed a page, report was okay, so I tried to login to the server, worked, hit the two sites the customer had issue with, worked. The issue? SMF 1.1.1 - it posts a phpsessid to the URL and thus triggers mod_security, well recent tweaks to the intrusion system I flagged a configuration option which reads the mod_security log, and blocks on its fails. Thus the customer’s IP was banned via the firewall.

I think I may be getting overly exhausted, I do that now and again in the middle of big projects and various things looming, I really need to take a photo day, heck maybe even a nap day to follow that :) but something is definitely not quite right, found myself today around 12:30 just dead tired, I took a nap till 2:30, then woke up, made some calls, helped Sam over at Fluxar get some PHP magic happening, then hung out a bit doing laundry, and I was exhausted again, laid down and woke up at 10pm - so just tired tired tired, going to try crashing out here again in a minute.

Got another project today, meeting a Photographer on Thursday @ Starbucks to go over some plans for  her website, already jotted some notes from our call, and our previous talk at the wedding, but I think it should be fun, I have a server migration to plan, and I imagine in a day or so once all options are exhausted  I’ll be getting a call from a site to look at an issue they are having, which leads me to spare cash.

Granted now I have some bills to pay, the big server setup a few months ago wasn’t what I’d call “cheap”, and some other expenses came up, so I have bills to pay, but I have been wanting to pickup a 80GB iPod 5G as well as a 35mm lens for the E-500, so I have both items sitting in my cart @ Newegg, just trying to hold off if possible, I know I could live without the new iPod, however I’d love to pickup the E-510 body (not the kit) and the 35mm lens, expensive, but it’d give me two 4/3 compatible camera bodies, 3 lenses - aka - lovely. With a wedding or two this fall season I’d love to get some time behind the lens and the E-510 before, but Newegg only has the E-510 kit, granted it comes with one lens I don’t have, but if I got that, I couldn’t get the 35mm also.

Anywhoo… I feel sleepy, so I am going to try sleep again, hopefully it comes, and hopefully the night is mellow. Night folks, prayers appreciated for my health, and if anyone feels overly generous to donate a 80GB iPod, E-510, 35mm lens,  or even just some cash, let me know ;)
