Windows XP (Service Pack2) ick.

After a long time of considering, pondering, etc. etc. I got my hands on Service Pack 2 with XP Home - and I must say …. I am really….. disgusted. Don’t get me wrong, for a new home user, pc user, etc. this is a awesome setup, very locked down, very cautious and secure, however - I am not a average user, I browse the registry, have a network, etc.

In building a computer for RJ (guy from Delano) I installed SP2 by default, and while it does seem more responsive (that and I am sure a AMD64 helped) it had me irritated within minutes.

Whenever I build a PC I snag all the updates from the net to a share on my primary windows desktop, that way I can hop on, get tons of driver updates instantly vs. downloading them one by one by one by one - saves a ton of time! However for some unknown reason SP2 felt anything over the network was a DOS application and thus could not be trusted! So I had to copy everything to the Linux server in house, drop it in a web folder, and save it one by one. I am glad local network vs. internet seems oh-so-secure to Microsoft.

My advice to anyone considering SP2 anytime soon - wait. Hopefully Microsoft will build some type of tool like “What level of computer user are you?” and have a level like “Average” user which allows network transfers, sharing folders etc. vs. having to basically “Ok” each process you want to set in motion. IRRITATING!

Oh and RJ - if you are reading, the computer is done, minus like 3 parts, should be here on Monday and be ready for you to pick up Monday Night or Tuesday Afternoon. I’ll call.

Stargate Finale’s

Well tonight marked the summer finale of both SG1 and Atlantis … which of course means no new episodes till years end usually - but SkyOne and the UK should be up from the start in a month or so from the get-go of this season.

SG1 - neat, but not the usual cliffhanger at mid season there usually is! I had hoped for something to leave me going “YOU CANT LEAVE ME LIKE THIS!” - instead they wrapped it up in one episode, not a huge deal.

Atlantis - Slow start sort of, but a nice cliffhanger :) Definately worth waiting for, but hopefully like Fox and SciFi seem to have a bad habbit of canceling shows before they should be - I hope they give Atlantis a fair run and don’t try to turn it and or SG1 into a Movie series like they have with the upcoming Farscape.

Anywhoo… I am going to go sit and sort computer hardware for sale, and see about updating my shop so its ready to go live.

iTunes vs RealPlayer Store

I am a big buff of the digital music format, I mean sometimes I dread buying new CD’s simply because I dont have any room to store discs anymore lol I have SHELVES of just DVD’s, CD’s, Software CD’s, Burned CD’s etc. etc. So when I first started iTunes it was awesome - could be 3AM - I could easily purchase a track, a album, and whammo - downloadin, and ready to listen in a few seconds.

Well recently ol Real decided “Lets compete with Apple like crazy” $0.49 tracks, entire albums right now for $4.99 - not to shabby. But with my experience over the last 30 minutes, it was not as smooth as iTunes.

Oxygen by John B. Olson & Randall Ingermanson

This book was probably the slowest start I have read in a long time, and since I was on a reading kick (1 more to go) basically I was hoping for a solid start that held my attention, but once the story got moving about 150 pages in, the book got even better.

The premise of the book is pretty simple. Traveling to Mars in the year 2014 – the entire mission is part of a media frenzy which will basically pay off NASA’s debts of the project, and provide funding to future Mars missions after the possible sucess of the first mission which the crew of Ares 10 planned to bring possible proof of life on another planet.

This is another Sci-Fi novel with hints of Christian life spun in, its also got a touch of a love story as well, but again for those of you actually wanting to read it, I dont want to spoil it. Definately an ‘ok’ book, finally got my attention and ended well.

Arena by Karen Hancock

I got this book for Christmas, it was on my list as well as other reviews to come, but I just wrapped up this one and I must say I really enjoyed it.

The premise was pretty cool, two girls, going in for a testing – wanting to make a quick $50 through some testing at the local college, and find themselves transported to another world. Callie our main character is sent into this alien arena alone, with only a small pack of supplies, and her journey begins.

Not wanting to ruin the book for anyone I wont go into much of the details of her journey – some things are better left unsaid ;) But the coolest part of the story is its relationship to one of the aliens the “Link” in which we see this Christian Sci-Fi novel’s connection to the author’s faith. In the book the people in this test, this Arena, have the ability to tap into a link, much like Christians have the ability to tap into God, and just like those in the book – they only do it when life is tough and hard to live with, but none the less the link is always there.

I enjoy this book very much – just like the Operation Firebrand Books, and Virtually Eliminated line, this book really does catch your attention. However I will note this book does have some oddities in it as I read, at times the storyline just jumped in and out of action, one second your walking down a hill, two seconds later a all out war has started! But it doesnt really effect the overall flow of the story, it tends to slow after that and allow you to take in what just happened (sometimes having to read things over again).

Definately a must read.
