I have a Job.

And so it begins…. as of today around 2:45pm, I got the official word from the co-owner that I am officially on-board! So needless to say I was pretty excited - this means a lot for my monthly budget, my plans for my life, etc. this weekend I’ll probably even hit up the apartment complex and see what they have open right now - Lord Willing, I Hope they have the 2 bedroom + garage that I can come look at, that would be wonderful!

But a good first day on my own, only had 2 calls to the last guy for help, which meant calling my brother ;) but all in all things went well - just wrapping up the afternoon, I have been on the phone here the last bit calling friends and family inviting them to come eat tomorrow night to celebrate, my sister made the good call and said El Pueblo, so needless to say my belly is excited! So tomorrow we will celebrate it up, and I imagine tomorrow I’ll get things going on my employed status, paperwork, etc.

So big thanks to everyone for their prayers! More news to follow I am sure, but I am just quick blogging this from Textmate here on the Mac - once I get home and settled in, I’ll probably post more thoughts, for now, PTL!

Farewell Servers …. You will be missed!

The end of a big part of my life, that’s what it feels like! Tonight I shut down the core servers of TN/FH (the old ones) - I had been with this DC since the early days of TN, migrating from a oversold T1, to a “SDSL” line that boasted LARGER speeds (yet never delivered), faster connections, that was down for nearly a week - but TN made it’s way back, rose from the ashes, a little hurt for cash, but pushing forward.

The move to this DC was mainly because a side project I picked up, started using the company, back then a startup, a simple, but bold company ready to provide great service, insanely competitive pricing, and for me, the second big dive into server management, as a guy who always had a physical rack of servers in front of me, it was quite a change indeed, but you learn, friendly server monkeys from the DC would give pointers, it was a great company, but in the end they changed names, and got a little “bigger” but still the CEO kept things going, and as some past posts note like in the hurricane they bought extra fuel, staff stayed on-hand, network things were figured out ahead of time if line XYZ died, hot cut to ABC - it was awesome, amazing, and comforting.

Then about a year ago, they merged with another company - and if your a server admin and know some of the key players out there, you’ll know the two companies - the merger was rough, and I stuck with it, I re-vamped servers, got newer hardware, invested in some VPS tech, got tons of IP’s, found new contacts - but it was nothing like the first company, it was a money maker, and who can blame them, money has to be made somehow, and they started working towards it, and in some cases loosing that “personal” touch and going more towards the cold corporate penny picking, every little thing was a extra $2, or $10, or suddenly they’d determine they weren’t billing you for XYZ (which was originally free!) and without warning a $25-$50 monthly increase, things got sloppy.

I stayed for a year, exactly what I said I’d give them to straighten up a little, I know what it is like to re-organize, didn’t want to declare them dead just yet, but with horrible pricing, pushy sales folk, and bad communication and billing system, when the recent option came up, I took it, and I’d take it again - I have no true ill feelings for the company, they have to find their footing, and I am sure there are some out there with zero problems, but the move for me was also related to the upcoming position I may get come Friday, so reasons there as well.

But none the less, I feel a big chapter in my life is indeed closing, sort of makes me a little sad - granted I have 1 server there still, it’s a client server and it’ll probably move in the next month, getting my budget even more happy - but it’s been quite a ride, and I hope, that even with a new job, I can continue to manage and operate TN/FH for many years to come until the bargain hosts run me out of business, but I hope that day is a long long ways away.

Anywhoo - that was my trip down memory lane, a fun ride, more fun to come I hope. Thanks for reading, and again, mega thanks for everyone for their prayers over the past few weeks with the migrations, with only 6 tickets in the end across all the moves, I could not be happier, and now with a big chunk of money saved a month, and bigger hardware for the better price, I move forward, as I am trying to do with a lot of things, so here’s to a great 2008!

With 20 minutes to spare!

So far so good! Even the move for some to MySQL5 as well - smooth! No burps I can detect. Monday I have some clean-up to do with things, I am aiming for Tuesday to shut things down, then that leaves me with some minor tweaks and changes, but nothing massive, then the move is 100% complete!

Looking forward to this next week - but for now, one last glance over of things, then sleep, might meet my 2am prediction at this rate! :) Night again!

Too long….

So far so good, gotten 3 servers squared away, 2 little ones remain, shouldn’t be so bad, going to run em real quick this evening, probably 3-4 hours max, but I’ll probably start at 10pm vs. 11pm and try to be in bed no later than 3am on Sunday.

Then its sleep, sleep, sleep - must get a schedule down in which I can hold a normal 9-5 time-frame :) for some reason offices don’t operate from 12-7am! Silly companies.

Anywhoo, rest soon. Thanks for the prayers! More later…

Grandma, Jobs, Sleep

So I would of posted this update earlier, but sleep beckoned quickly, and I may still yet go back and visit with it some more, but apparently when I sleep - the world still moves forward. :) So some updates - Grandma is resting comfortably at the hospital, they have her on a Nitro Drip if memory serves, she wants to have a cardio specialist see he before anyone starts poking at her heart, so me and dad are still prepared to head that way if needs be.

Other news, a job. Things went left, swerved right, then back on course it seems, my brother left me a note that I was still a possibility and things were leveling out a bit, so I may have a standard 9-5 job here soon, which would indeed be nice and more or less seal the deal on an apartment, so pretty jazzed, if it doesn’t pan out (which is possible), I have a little under 2 months to rev up things with FH/TN to make it towards that end or I more aggressively push for a job locally.

Anywhoo - a busy day ahead it seems, some programming to wrap up, things with the migration seem to of gone smoother than smooth, only 1 note on Monday, and even then never got a note back, so hoping it’s cleared up, if not I am sure I’ll hear something in the next 2-3 hours and we’ll get it squared away ASAP - but for now, some quick rounds, then a hot shower, followed by some iPod + Code - should be a interesting code-a-thon day! More later! Thanks for the prayers for Grandma, more updates on her as I get em!

Morning!

One of the downsides of course to going for weeks with little sleep is your health, and in my case, I know my limits on sleep, well one side effect is of course pain as the body is exhausted, another is for me a family favorite - throwing up. Thus this morning as I was getting ready for church I urp’d and urp’d good - of course I felt better afterwards, cleaned up and was only 10m late for church.

Church was fun, and I am glad I didn’t just wimp out and go back to sleep (Faith is Done now, all accounts over) - got to sit next to Scott and His Dad, got to see Dan and Val, and a good portion of the Poon family, the nephews were there and I scared members of the church as I gave Gavin a big hug, and then I proceeded to share the secret of shirt.woot.com as he enjoyed my sugar rush t-shirt.

So a fun morning, and more things this afternoon, but for now, I can get at least 3 hours of sleep in before the Foster’s shin-dig, so going to try and nap a bit, then load up, and head towards the ice-creamery, I am thinking of a shake with Chocolate, Malt, and maybe Carmel, or PB - not sure so many choices, so little time - anywhoo, thanks to everyone for the prayers, don’t worry, tonight’s move is really just 3 sites, it’s a low-profile smaller server, all the BIG stuff for this weekend is done, next weekend is the move of 2 other smaller systems, but by no means the collective GB’s of data this one had this weekend, so sleep is coming, promise.

Anywhoo - I am off, one more day of the house to myself, tonight aside from sleep I hope to get some headway on my bedroom. Okay, processing a ‘break;’ on random rambling, more later I am sure. Good Sunday to All!

Migration Day

The day has arrived, and how many folks truly know about it - remains a mystery. I was reviewing the notice about the move, only 34% of the folks opened the email, granted that’s a little skewed as of course the tracking relies on a image being loaded that’s embedded into the email, so if they are in text mode or have images disabled, I’ll never know - but tonight is the night, staring at 11PM (GMT-8).

Moves have become pretty common place to me, so I know a few things to look for, but tonight before the move I do need to do some final spring-cleaning of the servers, as I know some sites are still online which are no longer hosted with me, so why move over data that is essentially a waste of resources, but with that I’ll make a backup of all DNS settings, as I know custom records I have added won’t survive the move (or haven’t in past migrations) - but overall things should go over pretty smoothly.

So for now, I figure I have about 5 hours before I have to get to work on final clean-up and rounds, but I took most of yesterday off, of course a big chunk was done reading up on ASSP and various cPanel implementations - some promising stuff, some mixed reviews - but as SpamAssassian doesn’t seem to be cutting it much anymore, it’s a possible alternative and stop-gap measure while I look for a more robust solution to proxy mail thru, MailCleaner is nice, but even it’s effectiveness has been less than stellar.

Anywhoo - back to loafing, I have an alarm set for 8pm, so if I crash out Awaken will start playing me some iTunes love. Prayers are appreciated, I am hoping and praying for a smooth move with no issues, monitoring looks good, average ping time is HALF of what it is now from all monitoring sources both service based and “Hey can you ping this” based ;) so I am just excited about the move, the improved performance, and new avenues this helps to open in the budget and possibility of an Apartment in the next few months - there are other things to write about, but more later, for now I need breaklunch. Good Friday to All.
