So far nothing bad has happened, no one has called angry and threatening to sue - so so far so good, only 1 small server to roll tonight, should be pretty painless. I got some sleep, but not as much as I’d of liked honestly, but as it stands at 10pm the last bits will move over, and come Monday, DNS servers will be moved, and Tuesday I’ll migrate TN/FH to the new server for them, so going well.
If FTP is down for you, your using the old server, try OpenDNS or clear your DNS cache and close out apps, and try it again. For now, I am going to zone out and pass out, so if you have issues, email me.
I have some great friends (of which also happens to be a client) - this morning I got the note from my good friend BdG that he had snagged me a copy of the MacHeist Bundle - so this morning I have 8 (9 soon, all 11 within a week I’d imagine)! Very cool thing to do, gave me some great tools like TaskPaper which I’d been wanting to get ahold of, and if, but more like when the other apps get unlocked, it also gives me some great tools for the business as well adding in Snapz Pro and Pixelmator - so very jazzed indeed.
BdG if I could hug you in person, I would, and I wouldn’t care who saw it. Thank you my friend, a very awesome gesture indeed, and a nice pick me up to my day! Let’s hope it all flows as well! Happy Friday Folks!
So it begins another year of MacHeist, I am in #macheist right now watching the slow release of all the apps in this year’s bundle - and obvious some folks are impatient, not everyone is hip to the whole “Web Events” - I remember when Greg did his awards show via IRC, some loved it, some hated it - but in the end, I think it went off well.
Now each time a bundle like this goes out, there is a crowd on both side of the tracks, that see the good, and then the other side see’s the bad, honestly I think it’s good and good some more, some developers may not want to get on the bargain bandwagon, but so be-it, it is their code, their time, their choice - but this is a fun yearly even, and so far some decent apps, out of the 3 announced thus far I own Cha-Ching, but the version 2 looks good for Leopard, and with job options / rent / etc. all about to go nuts, a finances app sounds good.
The big perk I think to MH each year is the donation, granted it’s not the places folks would choose, but I think it’s some decent places and it’s well rounded, trying to get some from each area things like hunger, disease, and the big hitter lately “Earth” type options, MH sums it up as such:
Last year, our members were offered a choice of charities to have 25% of their purchase donated to. This initiative became a spectacular success, with $200,000 raised by the end of the event. This year, we’re hoping to shatter last year’s record numbers, and show how generous the Mac community can be.
Granted I know not all my readers are Mac users, and I myself am no 100% sold to any one OS (though Mac is 90% range) this is a great deal, and to any Mac Convert it’s a great way to get the ball rolling with some already wonderful apps for Mac.
So in browsing ol CompUSA this early AM I saw they had OSX10.5 for $99 - it’s $129 up front like I’d get it from Apple, but 2 things - 1) It’s a quick pickup. 2) It’s a $30 rebate - so I’ll have to wait a little for the savings, but a deal is a deal, going to go in this week before Friday and make sure they’ll have it in stock, if not I’ll just wait till they do.
Didn’t get much sleep last night, just a lot on my mind, and a lot of things I am trying to get sorted - things that shouldn’t be in my life, and trying to get things in my life that should be there - busy busy - I just really want to get things in a little bit more stable area than they have been the last 3 months, and the billing migration is one of those things, once things all settle I am going to be able to login via a mobile login via the Dash and do what I need from the road, anytime, anywhere - so a major plus indeed.
Health wise things are going okay, lost some weight, been trying to be a little more active when I can be, but also trying to be good on what I eat, but that also ties back into the budget, as it’s odd that foods that are “good” for you tend to cost more than those you can just pickup and eat… go figure but I am going to keep at it, and try to keep the pounds coming off this ol computer nerd.
On the other side of health, as you can see by the time stamp, its 2:30 - and yes, I am awake, after migrations that go past 5am, I tend to take a few days to level out, but migrations that end up waking me up 2 hours after I goto sleep, several times, for several hours, that’s another story all together lol - but I am just glad it’s done - it has all leveled out it seems, got no calls Saturday which was a plus, but all in all, it seems good - plus beyond the obvious bit of getting paid, it’ll be nice to throw in some additional services from the migration as there were a TON of outdated scripts, I am going to release a similar upgrade service via FH/TN as many folks install via auto-installers like Fantastico, Installatron, etc. and they don’t keep things upgraded, which leads to hacks, which is not a good thing now matter how you look at it.
Work side, I am wanting to work on infrastructure again - it’s been 6 months since the last big shake-up, de-commissioning old servers, migrating to new ones, the move went pretty well, but with everything getting audited via the migration to the new billing system - my hope, my goal, is to add a few more servers to the fleet using virtual servers, which means a BIG BIG BIG Server - I am thinking 4-8 Core, with 6-8GB of ram, storage is the one thing I am looking at seriously, as I want something super redundant, but also tolerant of 2 disk failures, so needless to say, this is not going to be cheap in the least. Part of me wishes local bandwidth was better, and more affordable, I’d love to build a datacenter in town and really do it up the way I have in my head.
Anywhoo - slowly rolling up on 3am here, I am feeling a little hungry, and the ol muscles are sore from what I am guessing is a cold as I’ve been running a temp most of the day, so I am going to go find something warm and tasty to eat, and then I think I am going to try sleep again - have a blessed Sunday folks.
So it seems you can save $20 off the retail price of 10.5 if you purchase via Amazon.com - not a horrible deal, but still means you run the gambit of getting 10.5 late, as some delivery companies aren’t prepared for the massive pre-orders, like with Harry Potter, some folks saw their pre-order days later.
I am not sure of my purchase plan as of yet, as one Canadian asked if I was going to get the family pack, I think I am going to hold off in general, or simply goto my local CompUSA in the AM and just pick it up then as I imagine they’ll have it, if not, there’s always the 2hr drive to visit my brother and his local apple store but time will tell.
So 300+ new features, do I rush out now and pre-order? Do I wait for it locally and just pick up a disk? Will it install on both my MBP and My iMac or do I need the family pack? So many questions, 10 days to find the answers - honestly it looks like a lovely upgrade, some of the functionality I am excited about (re: Stacks) some others (re: Time Machine) not so much, just unsure how it’ll affect performance.
So we shall see how it goes, plus I need to drum up $129 at the very least ah the joys of Mac ownership.
Well life is going going going, money is still tight, but such is the game I suppose, but thus I have been working on stage 2 of things with FH website for starters, I haven’t migrated the website and such over, but for starters the new customer portal which now puts together billing, support, and knowledge base information, so no more multi-site logins - and while I loved the software that powered each, the catch was price, in the end, $100+ in monthly fees for billing & support systems… but moving forward I am very happy with the new system, it’s got some good features that customers have asked for, and no major code modifications have been needed, so major plus.
So the plan for this week I want to migrate more folks over, PayPal people are the starting folk - I am doing it by hand, while there is a “Importer” I am using this opportunity to split up things a bit, but also gives me a chance to update folks information that have on file, as on the previous billing system it was a bit of a pain, but also I want to use this time to get the current KB entries (even though limited) moved over, and on top of that also get a few videos finalized for setting up various OS & Softwares for using services - I have a few done, mainly just video, I do want to setup some Audio voice overs in time.
But the beat goes on, and enjoy The Office Season 3 right now here at 2:30am - trying to decide to wrap it up and head to bed, or keep working thru the night and make some more progress on things…. time will tell.
Anywhoo - have a good week folks, might not be a active posting week, but that too time will tell. Night
