PS:353 – And some are!

It has been quite the week. Dental work has left me still a little swollen from Tuesday (guy’s gotta eat!) but it’s calming down some still, a little bleeding as they said there might be, but so far today least it’s been since the pre-crown procedure.

This weekend some more into the move, having a 10×12 shed built in the backyard for storage & maybe depending on how laid out, I may run power enough to run a 3D printer… time will tell – BUT a busy weekend and a busy day today as we still need to run go get the lumber and such to get this thing built.

Now the “and some are” is in regards to the recent bogus job offer call, today I talked with a long time friend and client about some upcoming life changes he has going on, and how I am to be part of it, so it could be some good side work and some additional revenue on something I know how to do! So very excited.

Secondly, I got word back from my contract I sent out wanting an even tighter breakdown of what my project entails because they’ve been burnt before and want to ensure what I’m doing works – so I have a write-up I hope to have done by tonight before a migration, some pricing to consider on the side work, and then a busy weekend without much rest I’m guessing.

So for now, this was my 15 minute break to dump a little bit of stuff stored up in the buffer, and then back to my timing of the data migration for tonight (God Bless rsync) – should be maybe a 1-3GB update per server, mainly full re-sync of SQL & email, so at 2 hours for one server, into hour 3 of another – so back to work!

PS:352 – Job Offers that Aren’t Offers!

Oi – I got a note from a random person who said they saw my skillset and had a position for me at their company. Exciting right? I wish it had been.

I scheduled a call, which suddenly went from being with the original person to a “director” and the “Team” role seemed honestly out of place. The language around things seemed vague, and honestly, I knew it was going to be some marketing scheme very quickly. Honestly? See it through, maybe I’ll be wrong.

I wasn’t.

The first thing he said after being 15 minutes late to the call was he wanted me to come in, they had a position and I’d be easily making an “additional” 1k-3k extra a month through various “referral sharing” and “revenue stream sharing” options. So… my skillset being great how does this work?

So I asked how my IT experience and years with a successful company helped get me this position, and he said “Oh we don’t need anyone with IT or Web Skills, we want you to come learn how to sell our product as an additional revenue stream” – so I tried to keep myself calm from both first thought anger, then really just laughing. He explained how it could make me rich beyond rich – making MUCH more than what I’m making now.

He asked me some rather personal and forward questions about my finances – and I was done being nice, and for that matter straightforward and honest. Suddenly I was a real estate owner galore, several properties I rent, cryptocurrency investor – I think I may or may not have owned an island lol after a while I just felt like selling the guy the same load of crap he fed me. Sadly? I think he was starting to believe me.

I wrapped up the call, he gave me the usual “well if I know of anyone looking for IT services… I’ll give them your number” line, and wished him well.

Would have been nice to be a real offer, a few floating around lately of projects, but a few places I’ve applied are still silent, so for now? Keep burning it up and building! For now wrapping up some customer work, then at least 30 minutes on my own work before crashing out entirely.

PS:351 – Leaving Apple.

I’m honestly considering just slowly phasing out my Apple eco-system at this point. Why? Honestly? I’m just not really impressed with what I’ve seen coming down the pipeline.

For instance the iPhone 8? Seems silly to release it only to release “THE ULTIMATE PHONE OF ALL PHONES! X!!!!” and then to I laughed at the tech YouTubers who all made sure to remind me “It’s not called the “X” it’s the iPhone 10″. As many have said/reported why would you want the 8 when you can wait a few months and get the 10? Apple’s stock even dropped due to insanely low turnout.

But on the desktop, while I love the apps I have, I’ve considered getting a new Mac but the hardware isn’t open enough honestly. Why should I HAVE to buy memory that I can get elsewhere for cheaper that’s the same thing? I mean I’ve heard the argument “Apple knows their stuff”if they do, then how did I build this Hackintosh I’ve got right here doing everything just fine?

I’m just “Bleh” lately with Apple, I even have an old dell tower donated to me which is running Ubuntu 17.04 and I’m going, to be honest, it works. Looking at video editing software to replace iMovie, but even that if I just kept my iPad as my only Mac Device, it’d do the job just fine.

Time will tell, just something on my mind lately!

Moving over the next few weeks, starting the big save for a house, so farewell to the rental! Hoping things work smoothly and we can in a year or so have enough debt cleared and money saved to do something awesome in the house department!

For now, back to work!

PS:350 – The week that didn’t stop!

Oi! This was one of those weeks that while I’m excited about extra hours for consulting, I’d just as soon be done and sleeping!

I have 3 more tasks on the docket this evening, finishing a quote, a server, a piece of software.

Honestly? At the rate I’m going I think I’ll get 2 out of 3 unless I get a large boost in what I’ve got coded already. It’s glitchy, to begin with since I’m working with a really hard to work with the codebase. For instance, I’m having to embed javascript into javascript, to produce something that would have been easier and made the site function better if they simply avoided javascript in the first place.

I’m all for progressive coding ideas to give a real-time experience, no refreshing, however, honestly? for what this site does it should have been flat PHP generating HTML no buzz, no fluff, just HTML.

Now, this week will eventually end, but hopefully, I can get some rest before a busy week ahead.

PS:349 – Enough is Enough.

Tuesday was a bit of a blessing, and a little bit wake up call.

Really blessed to have customers who appreciate what I do. I really am. Doing this over 15 years I must say it can become a grind that is heartless sometimes. No passion. No joy. No love. I’m tired of customers running my business by how they want to run their business.

Today I buckled down into the billing system cleared out garbage and garbage accounts. Folks I’ve reached out to before and gotten nothing and today out of about 15 accounts I sent notice to, 1 reply and this guy was ready to help, apologetic of his overdue status. We have a call in place tomorrow to sort things out (and I have some research to do as to what’s failing so we can fix it!).

Lots of changes, and really working to get a real presence for Thrust Networks, not just a 5 year coming soon page. Really want to kick things up a notch and get it done. Just finished a server deployment for a customer, and now to fine tune two websites for another! On my way!

PS:348 – Tech Burnout?

I’ve done tech forever. No really. Even as a kid it was taking apart this, or that – then it was computers. I like to really just fiddle and work with things, I may not have a degree – but honestly? I could probably get one just for the fact that I’ve used things for so long, I probably know them just about as well as someone who studied, because I have – daily.

So here I sit typing on a computer I built, it’s not supposed to be able to run this OS, but it does. OSX home built machine and it does the job. But lately, tech has started to honestly bore me a bit. I have dived into a world of creation using 3D Printing, looked at laser engraving, screen printing at one point, and photography both land based and aerial based.

Video editing is a newer joy, I can still edit a mean photo – but honestly lately I just feel so adrift in the world as to what I’m going to do, and I know some of it is simply I’m exhausted and burnt out, not a real “break” in ages, doing the family man thing doesn’t always leave room for “me” time to just chill. It’s: change a diaper, clean a potty, give a shower, get meds, take temperatures, go to class, pick up this, go there, etc. so while I do have a job, my other job is Dad/Husband.

Some moves coming up soon which are going to leave me missing my space here. I have a TON of room, but the space I’m moving to will soon be smaller for about a year or so if all goes as planned, but it means even less room for trying to have “my space” and that’s a bit to swallow for now. Sure its a “year-ish” but how I wish it wasn’t.

I need to find a way to recharge on a regular basis. Some more me time, so time that isn’t all family or all work because 90% of the time that’s what it is. I need to draw some more boundaries with customers, get some more clients growing, and really just find a day to really rest. Not just say I’m resting, but actually unwind, unplug, and do my best to be me vs. always on, always connected, always working on no sleep and high stress – Me.

Maybe then, the burnout will slow and I’ll find a passion and a greater desire for tech again, as it is, I’m thinking tonight I’m going to clear off 80-90% of the random apps I don’t need on my iPad, and maybe same on my phone, and maybe breathe life into my Nexus 6 as maybe more of a daily driver vs. the iPhone – then again, I may just go to bed, it’s nearly 2am.

PS:347 – Dying Drive

Ugh. A customer had a broken computer, the drive is failing hard. Currently hooked up with the NAS doing a full RSYNC of everything – it made about a 1/3 of a pass and the drive shut down.

They had Carbonite running so there is a solid backup, but that leads to the bigger issue, their backup server. It’s not running! It cleared 44.4GB before it completely ate it, and as of posting it’s at 53GB of +300GB of data restored. I’m not sure why they don’t make it run off BitTorrent or something, spread out the data as I’m sure its replicated – but it is what it is!

I’ve let the drive chill some today and going to do one more final pass before it’s done, but a great feature for this NAS is having shell + USB access drive access, makes it SUPER easy to backup to! I’m thinking of suggesting an ASUSTOR AS1002T for their office! That way we can disassemble the BIG beast and retire it, save some power, and make it easier to keep running.

For now, it’s back to evening projects! May have to wrap early as I have a small girl who isn’t tired and keeps trying to snuggle a sleeping mom who has to be awake in a few hours.
