PS:352 – Job Offers that Aren’t Offers!

Oi – I got a note from a random person who said they saw my skillset and had a position for me at their company. Exciting right? I wish it had been.

I scheduled a call, which suddenly went from being with the original person to a “director” and the “Team” role seemed honestly out of place. The language around things seemed vague, and honestly, I knew it was going to be some marketing scheme very quickly. Honestly? See it through, maybe I’ll be wrong.

I wasn’t.

The first thing he said after being 15 minutes late to the call was he wanted me to come in, they had a position and I’d be easily making an “additional” 1k-3k extra a month through various “referral sharing” and “revenue stream sharing” options. So… my skillset being great how does this work?

So I asked how my IT experience and years with a successful company helped get me this position, and he said “Oh we don’t need anyone with IT or Web Skills, we want you to come learn how to sell our product as an additional revenue stream” – so I tried to keep myself calm from both first thought anger, then really just laughing. He explained how it could make me rich beyond rich – making MUCH more than what I’m making now.

He asked me some rather personal and forward questions about my finances – and I was done being nice, and for that matter straightforward and honest. Suddenly I was a real estate owner galore, several properties I rent, cryptocurrency investor – I think I may or may not have owned an island lol after a while I just felt like selling the guy the same load of crap he fed me. Sadly? I think he was starting to believe me.

I wrapped up the call, he gave me the usual “well if I know of anyone looking for IT services… I’ll give them your number” line, and wished him well.

Would have been nice to be a real offer, a few floating around lately of projects, but a few places I’ve applied are still silent, so for now? Keep burning it up and building! For now wrapping up some customer work, then at least 30 minutes on my own work before crashing out entirely.

PS:349 – Enough is Enough.

Tuesday was a bit of a blessing, and a little bit wake up call.

Really blessed to have customers who appreciate what I do. I really am. Doing this over 15 years I must say it can become a grind that is heartless sometimes. No passion. No joy. No love. I’m tired of customers running my business by how they want to run their business.

Today I buckled down into the billing system cleared out garbage and garbage accounts. Folks I’ve reached out to before and gotten nothing and today out of about 15 accounts I sent notice to, 1 reply and this guy was ready to help, apologetic of his overdue status. We have a call in place tomorrow to sort things out (and I have some research to do as to what’s failing so we can fix it!).

Lots of changes, and really working to get a real presence for Thrust Networks, not just a 5 year coming soon page. Really want to kick things up a notch and get it done. Just finished a server deployment for a customer, and now to fine tune two websites for another! On my way!

PS:344 – The NAS Project – Ready!

Done! Fully converted from 2 Drives (RAID1) -> 3 Drives (RAID5) – Took about 2 days, and this time ZERO use on the NAS, just wanted it to be chugging on core data.

So the real world tests begin. I’ve got the Mac Photos app using the library stored on the NAS, so even right now have it downloading all of the photos off my iPhone to see how long it takes. 2057 photos to import, so at the end of writing this post (which I’m doing in chunks, working on other things) I should have a rough idea with the help of a handy-dandy-stopwatch app 😀

Software upgrade on this did improve the UI greatly, happy with the overall smooth functionality, however one thing I’m bummed about and I haven’t reached out to support yet is the remote access. It does say you can remotely access your NAS, however, I’ve kicked my ISP provided Router/Modem into bridge mode, and it still won’t connect. Very odd – so one thing on the to-do list.

Apps so far I don’t have anything I really need. The core reason for this NAS was storage in-office, and while it does offer some LAMP builds and such, not where I want my dev to live.

Once the overall setup is done, I do want to do some real world speed tests, it’s not the fastest going at 90-100MB/s Write/Read – but we shall see what I’m getting on that with a Gigabit hook up network wise but accessing it via Wifi (5Ghz).

As I wrap up here 16 minutes passed and 53 videos/photos copied from my phone. Bear in mind, iPhone 7+ which has big photos, and I shoot everything in 4k video – so could be big stuff, but the network is chugging along:

Again more real world tests in sustainable speeds vs. lots of smaller files soon. For now? Wrap up and sleep.

PS:337 – Storage.

I’ve been toying with the idea of bulk storage for a while. I picked up several 5TB USB Drives from Target as they were discounting them, and they work just fine, however, they are not easy to have on the desk, 3 power bricks, 3 wires, it’s a mess.

So I’ve been exploring building my own NAS with FreeNAS, however, the hardware to build it is picky, and while I am sure I could make it work – Size, Cost, Power. So enter a NAS. They aren’t always cheap, in looking at a few models without disks I’d be looking easily at around $500 for something entry level with 2 bays.

Then I came across ASUSTOR which happens to be part of ASUS, so I took a look, and for the price point? Amazing pieces of hardware, this is the ASUSTOR AS1004T 4-Bay:

Simple, easy. No drive bays to have on the front, instead, you slide off the case and install the drives.  Not a huge deal at all, sure that’s nifty, but for half the price? I’m really good at mounting drives with thumbscrews 😀 The 2 Bay unit actually has a few good videos here and there, so figured if I got really wild maybe mount the YiCam and a few other of the cameras and film the setup and such and share it on TFH’s YouTube Channel? Maybe the start of really digging in? Anywhoo…

The plan is to take the 3 drives I’m using now and clear off 2 drives, make it into a lovely RAID1 build first, then migrate all the data over, simply plug the external storage in, copy the data off (may even clean it up a bit) then once the drive is clear and on the RAID1 array, format and add the 3rd drive and convert it to a RAID5 array, thus doubling my storage and having continuing to have a single drive failure, long-term I’d love to find a deal on a 5TB drive again and expand some more (15TB ain’t bad) but long-term it’d be great to have 4 x 10TB drives in there and be able to archive video, photos etc. plus storage on Backblaze’s B2 is cheap, maybe sync it for archive purposes?

All in all, it’d save me some money, make the drives easier to access on the road and on the network, and since too it’ll talk to a VPN, figure maybe re-work my VPN so on the road I can securely connect to everything.

It has been a long week, and with this new setup going to continue the journey of re-working my office a bit, a lot to do over the next few months, busy busy busy. Tired. For now going to try and wrap up my evening projects, get invoices out, and go to bed. Night.

PS:330 – Birthday Palooza!

So tomorrow I will no longer have a 2-year-old. No, she will be 3. How time flies and so much fun watching a little girl grow up and a personality form! Oh boy, she has quite the personality!

She does though share her day of birth with 2 others in the family, my nephew Ronnie and my cousin Sarah. Sadly we have not ever had a true mega birthday! Oh how much fun with that be!? Okay okay, may not for anyone else but myself as I think it’d be fun to really just have something awesome for the big day!

This year is mellow as the one set of grandparents are galavanting with my sis and her family. We’ve already had a wild party with her other grandparents which included hats & balloons! (she was excited!)

Not sure what the age of 3 will bring, some have warned its scarier than the 2’s but either way – I love my baby girl!

PS:326 – Passive Income + Writing

As it was told to me the other day “Adulting Sucks.” It really does sometimes. Working to build passive income, and that’s not always easy but I am wanting to do so via a series of blogs and advertising – but honestly? Who has time to write.

Well that’s the plan to make the time and work toward writing at least once a day but I’m looking for something to work as a posting ground in which I can then distribute the post to other blogs, so say for instance I’m writing a something for a tech piece that would fit on this blog and maybe 2 others, simply tag where it posts and boom, everywhere.

I started a review of Thrust Networks website recently and I forgot how much leg work I did towards building the content layout, just need to write it all up and get it online, but honestly the brand name of Thrust Networks  has come on my radar as something I’m considering changing or loosing. There is another Thrust Networks in Sydney, and one in India (which seem to love my Facebook page) but the thing is honestly its always had a connection to the misconception of being a company that deals in porn.

Since the  early days I remember when talking to Ensim (a control panel I first used) the sales rep was hesitant talking to me and said “I don’t think we do business in your industry” and I asked “Shared Hosting?” Well the name set him to think “Thrust” as in Thrusting – maybe it’s time for a change, or a really clean re-brand.

A lot going on, a lot happening – just finished recording an FH Update for July, need to edit it, write up a newsletter, and maybe even sneak in a nap! Not sure how clear this entire blog was, a lot of rambling in this one 😀

PS:324 – Direction

It has been a crazy summer.  Not easy to find a balance sometimes, but working hard to, my project this weekend has been a bold one. What is it?

Make my office workable.

It’s not that it is impossible to work in here, it’s just I don’t like the layout for productivity. My goal is to make this desk I’m at right now my “get work done” desk. However, I want to swap out the table for a similar build as this desk and have it be more “creative” so writing, designing, and creating.

Going to work on this till about 1 AM tops, tomorrow I am going to enjoy GOG2 with my dad, should be nice to go see a flick with the guy – I do like him 😀

For now going to work on what I can work on, may go get the makings of another door desk tomorrow after the movie, because let’s be honest, what says fun like 105F weather + a 60-80lb door lugged into the house -or- plan B which is sleep 😀

All alone this weekend too, wife and kiddo are at the beach with her mom and sister until Monday, so sadly a bit too quiet here.
