PS:355 – Office Packup

So tonight I’m going to start packing up my office down to the essentials – basically down to computers and 1 pencil, 1 pen. That’s it!

25 days and counting till we have to be fully moved out and cleaned out, etc. so going to get this side of things cleared up as much as I can tonight before crashing out to do another mad-dash weekend at the old house getting things finalized, painted, etc. still some things to do, want it to be perfect to get things moved into.

Plus we have storage being built which is handy vs. a monthly fee, so that’ll help too! But hoping this weekend proves to be very productive and having a mini-yard sale over Saturday/Sunday trying to get rid of a few things, but all in all should prove to be a productive weekend.

With the office slowly winding down – still have to map out the new space which is a little bit smaller, not sure if my desk as-is will be the final or if that’ll be a secondary desk and the fold-up will be second, but be nice to have my standing desk again!

So lots to do,  busy day, going to try and get a few extra hours in if possible work-wise, but ultimately tonight aside from packing up a bit, sleep is on the docket, as last weekend with migration I went basically from Migration to Lowes, a VERY long day.

PS:331 – Crypto

So one of the big hypes out there right now is the HUGE rebirth it would seem (not that it ever really went away) of Crypto Currency, not just Bitcoin, but names like Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin – and honestly? I wish those coins I mined years ago on a whim – I wish I knew where I saved the text file lol. Live & Learn I suppose, but BTC even down the last few days @ $2,493.24US for 1 BTC? Oi. Would have been nice.

I’ve done honestly a little home work, and picked up a little coin on this dip, most seem to be from what I can see a careful pull back due to changes on August 1st, but if the trend picks up after things stabilize, not thinking I’ll be rolling in money by any means, but be neat to make this investment and see if perk up after the balance.

One great place to get some solid info is BiteSizedBitCoin. Honestly? He’s got some solid info – worth a watch for some good info, but not the end all, trust me I have a folder in my bookmarks which are just full of resources.

I have a few servers actually using a CPU or two mining for a alt-coin, for which in my finds I get paid out in BTC, which for some spare CPU cycles and not hurting anything on these servers got paid a whomping 0.00104670 Bitcoin (~$2.61 USD) which is for a week of spare CPU cycles and me doing absolutely nothing.

I don’t know how far this investment path will go for me,  but if it continues to grow in any area, maybe re-invest this BTC into LTC (Litecoin) or other alt-coin and see how it takes off, time will tell!

PS:320 – Being Mobile

So a mini-vacation is on-going, sadly it being the middle of the work week it means that my daughter and wife are at the beach right now, and I’m in a hotel room working and waiting on next steps from people for a bit.

This trip I have really not even cracked open the laptop which is rare for me, I am actually completely running on a iPad Pro 10.5 (Sprint LTE) and I have not been disappointed! At first, I figured it’d be nice to have it as a backup, unlimited data on a bigger tablet would mean some work I could do but not all, as coming from a Mini it didn’t have enough room to get me where I needed to be, but honestly the MacBook is sitting in the backpack. It’s only come out to charge devices!

Split screen is amazing as I have had SSH on one side, notes on the other then swap it for a Crisp window/browser/transmit etc. – I am honestly looking forward to iOS11!

So far I am using an older keyboard (Logitech k480) which I picked up on the cheap, however I did order earlier in the week a new keyboard which profile wise is going to be a bit less clunky, more portable, I picked up a Amazon Basics tablet stand and its been awesome! Folds up nicely, so really my mobile work-space has been awesome.

All in all, while I wish I could go play, my compile is coming to an end, and thus writing time is done, I will have to post this later!

// Update – We are home! Nice to still work on the iPad Pro and write up some content, working on some images for a few projects in progress – tired. But probably one of the more workable getaways I’ve ever had, it wasn’t a big hiccup to get out a laptop, get wifi on, hook into my vpn, finding enough room to be comfy, then get another device to read and do research! So again this has been an amazing update to my mobile office.

As this summer goes on, I may find myself at a coffee shop, an office, co-work space etc. just really trying to make myself more mobile than I have been with a BIG bag, literally now it is a small pouch which has charging cable, keyboard, iPad Pro. Lightweight, ultra portable.

PS:311 – MacOS Sierra

So tonight during my week clean-up (reviewing time I put in on contracts, making invoices, email catch-up, and order queue review) I started on a process to really get my Computing setup working smoother.

If you recall I built a hackintosh last year and it’s served me fairly well, it’s not likely everyone’s cup of tea as the setup isn’t always forgiving for a production machine. I tried once to upgrade to MacOS Sierra and let’s just say it did not go well. I ended up restoring a disk image I made of the system before the upgrade but was in the clear. Figured it was time to try again as summer comes I will be traveling and syncing desktop & docs to iCloud would make for a more portable work experiencing.

I will note if you have a GA-Z170N-GAMING 5 motherboard like I do suggestions for upgrading if you have issues?

  • Upgrade to latest clover.
  • Fresh versions of KEXTS
  • AppleACL
  • Delete MacOS Sierra Installer + Re-Download it.

All in all? Some minor hiccups but now I’ve got everything sync’d up between devices and my 2015 MBP will travel a little smoother, content writing is more unified with Bear, and in this process I’ve even cleaned my desk a little. Nothing to brag about, but better.

I do have more journey in making this office a tad more “work like” here after taxes and business level out, saving up for a new desk to replace my folding table, and on the back wall behind me want to put a small couch for relaxing/coding when I need a change of location.

Also VPN’d up outside of my own VPN setup, I am going to cut down from a Bi-Costal VPN node setup to just a single private one of my own for business security, and then keep this new one for devices like my Phones, Laptops and Tablets, too once the wife gets moved off Verizon to Cricket full time this month, lock her down because while Cricket may not be as fast as Verizon, at least they won’t sell off everything she does on her phone – glad I get covered on 6 devices! Woot!

More work to do tonight aside from just getting work all streamlined, going to put in a bit of dev time on a BIG project, but been working on FlockHosting, got it loading SMOOTHLY! Already brainstorming what Thrust Networks will be like, but really pushing this year for some hefty growth if at all possible as all sides are a bit wobbly with some clients and I can’t get too comfortable just coasting hoping more business will just appear! Hitting the pavement running, saving more, growing more, now if I could just get sleeping more in there somewhere 🙂

Be well! Posted this on FB, but figure this might encourage anyone who stumbles across this too:

PS:300 – This is Sparta!

Okay so I had to do it, there was no option to not do it. 300 posts in, 65 to go and I’ll have posted a full year’s worth of posting. Now I know I set out to do a post a day, but as I read recently on a “Being a pro blogger” article it’s not about posting every day, it’s about posting on a schedule you can maintain.

I still plan to continue the idea of post something (PS) it’s been fun, it’s giving me a way to really post, but I want to continue to grow content. Even this a new tool I picked up it’s a great writing tool called Bear for OSX/iOS and I already pro’d up because it allows me to build out content which is easily access via the app on computers, tablets, and phone. Granted if I ever go back to Android full time I’d loose it, but for now? It works.

Has been a couple of busy days. Low on sleep, already have 10+ hours in this week for admin time, and it’s just barely Thursday. Have a server quote nearly ready to go, a little excited about it if it goes through, but I fear the customer who says:

I trust you, do whatever it takes to make my site shine!

Then the follow-up email after a quote that’s even $20 more than he was paying previously you get the response:

Won’t the original idea work? It was cheaper, and it’ll work, right?

Sadly sites that grow don’t always realize that you reach a level of popularity, you need more resources, you need to design better, plan better, you need to really work and invest into your site not just try to scrape by on the shared hosting platform you used. Move up to VPS, move up to Dedicated, move up to load balancing. If you have a site that needs jet fuel to run, don’t put in two cycle gas from your weed whacker. It’s not the same.

Going to take my quote to bed and chill out, for a bit. Till the next post.

PS:284 – Today’s the Day!

Today’s a migration day, well the next 3-5 days I’d imagine will be part of the migration – and for once? This isn’t about servers. Migration to a new home, time for an upgrade in space and today at 11am I get the keys! Pretty jazzed, to the internet will be installed between 4-6pm so hope to have the office migrated tonight and online if possible, but unless an insanely productive afternoon and quick internet install, kind of doubting I’ll be sleeping there tonight – but if there’s a bed there’s a way 😀

Looking forward to building out the office a bit, still want to save up for the FreeNAS build, want to look at maybe converting back to a standing desk at some point, and maybe even for once decorating my office a bit.

Should be an adventure over the next few months for sure. For now, kiddo is still asleep, going to try and get some things slowly packed up, going to disconnect the TV today and get things all ready to go to move it – I am thinking that after I get the keys, about going to Costco and getting two of the big tubs which are awesome and a shelving unit for the garage to hold the tubs as some are here already and simply storage – but would be nice to have them off the ground.

Again going to be a journey for sure over the next few months.

PS:183 – Faster.

The great thing about servers is they can be pushed to limits. Saves money, and allows for a decent density of customers, but at some point you hit limits. Things won’t go faster.

I’ve always been one who is not a “SMUSH EM IN!” type of business. I don’t oversell. I have limits on each box and I stick to them, not even a “Well this customer isn’t really using it…” type of line, if they are a user, they are taking up resources. Plain. Simple. Easy.

So this weekend I’ve been moving folks from one set of servers to another. A fresh new VPS cluster not using Virtualizor but Proxmox which seemed a little more “Grown up” to me. It’s been around for ages and finally just decided – transition = something new.

Things thus far are running insanely well. I was able to migrate a number of mail servers over with so far 0 issues. 0. As in none. This re-structure thus far is going great!

This blog even just finished it’s move over and it’s a bit more snappy network wise, pure SSD setup is snappy, and all of my settings carried over just have to shift a cPanel license as soon as the remaining two sites are fully migrated and then it’ll kick this out of “Trial Period” mode and onto full production.

An insanely busy week ahead. My body isn’t having it – long hours, high stress, deadlines galore. I’ve gotten a lot of things on my plate as of late as I noted with these contracts, one of which is going to live in a small Linux virtual here on my laptop so as I’m traveling the code goes with me and I can test in a dev environment which requires no network connection.

Thankfully the trip the first part is about 5.5 hours to Sacramento, which has WiFi, so occupy a small child, do some work over the VPN (which also is rebuilt and on this speedy network) and have hotspot in tow just in case – a lot try to squeeze into the next 3 days – thus why I’m posting the blog at just about 1AM vs. later tonight. Go Go Go. Lots to get accomplished and it feels more and more like so little time.

Have a good week all!
