Harry’s vs. Dollar Shave Club

So the other day while browsing my overwhelming SDCC feed on Instagram, it said: “Try Harry’s!” it boasted that it was a better blade, and a better price, and while they claim that, unless I’m grandfathered into some insane pricing setup, the pricing was about $1 difference.

I considered the offer for $8 via Instagram, however, I didn’t want to jump into another subscription which for something I honestly don’t do that often, the subtle beard is a common thing for me, and by subtle I mean – I get harry. It happens.

I was Target bound today, picking up a scooter for an upcoming 4yr old 🙂 and saw the display and figured “Why not” it wasn’t as robust an offer as the online, but it also meant I didn’t need to wait, that is one plus over DSC is that in the past if I was out of blades for any reason, I was stuck. No quick pickup all local Target locations carry their products, and I didn’t need shave cream or anything else, Brandless has me covered.

So tonight I had a blade setup fresh and ready for each and I must say in the hand, Harry’s felt better, more control, stable, a bit larger so it wasn’t a small thing to hold, it was comfortable. The cut was cleaner too + as my hair is insanely thick/full usually with the DSC blade it’s constant tapping and rinsing, only had to do that 1 time after I over shaved without rinsing – but no tapping out hair. Nice.

All in all, in comparison to the final cut, Harry’s took me less time. So as it stands, I’ve got the DSC on hold at the moment, pushed it back a month, may toss it back another, because honestly, that’s my big issue, DSC sends whether or not I need them, and I actually have a small stockpile, so may cancel and run out the stockpile then make a choice.

Harry’s seems to not be going anywhere, it’s comparable in price and the quality/ease of shave is better, plus I don’t HAVE to get a subscription for savings, the price in store is basically within a buck of what I was getting, so long-term maybe a fresh set of blades every 3-4 months? Not bad at all.

Overall verdict? Harry’s? Worth a shave. 🙂

PS:340 – The NAS Project – Copying & Building

So far I must say – not a bad NAS.

I’ve had experience with a few before, both custom built FreeNAS setup or two (even a simple build on my own) and commercial NAS products from other companies, but honestly? ASUS has done a great job for this price point. Very nice.

Now I won’t know the overall performance for another day or two, as I’m copying 2.8TB of data to the RAID1 to clear off the 3rd drive, but even that is chugging along while finishing building the array.

Software wise, I have looked around and overall? Not too shabby. Once it’s not copying and rebuilding data I hope to have a better look and install a thing or two for some testing, but as-is, logged in via SSH using rsync to mirror the USB 5TB drive (Formatted HFS+ which it was able to mount without issue!) and it’s not too shabby! It contains a lot of various things including a few old Time Machine backups from Mac’s long gone.

I’d say about a day more of copying, then it’s letting the RAID1 finish building, once that’s done then after I do a few spot checks of data (ensuring the Photos are safe is a big one) then I’ll get the 3rd drive moved into the array and running smoothly as RAID5.

For now, a night of work ahead, picked up a new contract, and some data to get moved around… honestly makes me a little tired just thinking about it lol. So off I go.

PS:336 – Relaxing by Coding.

So one of my side little projects of late has been the coding of tools to better keep me up-to-date on my coins – my previous post (334) I mentioned the small coding project and I think I may write a small page for it and update the code as I have updates, currently on version .04:

Coins.php (v.04)

A simple API call to get the value of a coin in the user's desired currency, great for using in Google Sheets (Use: =IMPORTDATA("yoururl") or if you simply want to grab
the current value of a certain coin. Currently geared towards USD, but hope in next version to add proper currency markings for the amount conversion.

## Changelog

.01 -   First Release
.02 - Adjustments to code & calling methods.
        Changed from XML output to plaintext for use of IMPORTDATA vs IMPORTXML
.03 - Removed dual posting of plaintext price for import & added amount conversion.
        Commented code.
.04 - Added Conversion for ATM without Value Text for Onion pull - Also adding $ for easier formatting on Onion curl call.

//Get Data
$url = file_get_contents("https://min-api.cryptocompare.com/data/price?fsym=".$_REQUEST['coin']."&tsyms=".$_REQUEST['curr']."");
$json = json_decode($url,true);
//Check for Amount to Convert
if ($_REQUEST['atm'] != '') {
$value = $_REQUEST['atm'] * $json[$_REQUEST['curr']];
$tvalue = round($value,2);
echo "$".$tvalue;
} else {
//no amount? provide plaintext response for dollar amount.
print $json[$_REQUEST['curr']];

Well, it’s quite handy, feel free to use it if you need to, but basically, it’s allowed me to use my Ometa2+’s OLED screen to every 5 minutes update the current value of coins! Here’s a peek:

Enjoying it a lot, really neat to look over and not have to re-open my Google Docs, just a glance and the screen presents all the goodies.

Maybe I’ll write it all up and send it over to the Onion forums, it is simple, purely informational, but thinking about maybe converting a bitcoin icon -> LCD file and place it on the right side? Long-term if the value is huge (they say it will be) then it will overlap, but for now, a bash script, php script, and a cron job give me some info at a glance.

PS:307 – The PS Project

While the idea was to PS (Post Something) for 365 days in a row, I obviously failed. Some might be able to balance all of life, six companies, 2.5yr old, bills, cooking, driving, trips, etc. – Sadly in that wild-life timeline, Posting to a blog didn’t fit in the top priority listing. Which has given me pause to writing as a side job, maybe it isn’t the right time.

I need a lot more scheduling and planning if I hope to launch a site in which the primary content is my writing. Long ago with HappyPalm and others, it was easy, I was passionate about what came on my phone, what news was a trend, it was in my face, and my responsibilities were fewer.

I want to get to the point where I can write, where I can do what I’m doing right now – typing, getting my thoughts out there, or the steady improvement of recording a vLog style video to produce and handle monthly for customers, but maybe find a way to do it nightly. I need a stronger schedule. Soon.

Taxes are coming. I am dreading them on the one hand, however this next week I’m going to sit down, crunch the numbers, get it all lined up so all I need to do? Plugin numbers, add all of it into Turbo Tax, see the good or the bad, get it sorted out and got it done. I don’t want to dread till the 18th; I need to find an accountant, likely need to re-structure how I do business – anyone knows anyone trustworthy and reliable?

Work has been a tad nuts, really working to get things ironed out smoother and smoother, just been one of those things where just when you think it’s going to get easier? Monkeywrench. Last week got one of those, and this week still sadly sitting waiting on one contract I have to pay out 3, going on four invoices – all of which I had hoped would be in the bank already, one is 60 days overdue today. Oi. Not the first time a customer’s done that – again I need to find a better way to handle these sorts of things.

I want to get back into the swing of the PS project; I want to get back into the swing of trying to write something every-day. I have pondered the start of the day and the end of the day, at the moment? Leaning towards the start, but imagining it’ll stick to the end. For now? Wrapping it up.

PS:297 — What next?

I have a lot on my mind lately. Christmas is over, and yet here we move quickly into 2017, and I’m trying to formulate a plan. What’s next is my big question.

I talked tonight to one of the tech’s where I do some server work, and found out one of the other engineers put in his notice a few days before the holiday. He asked when I was to be hired full time. So far no offers have been made – not sure!

Aside from that, I’m toying with several ideas; several “side” projects that I can create a more passive revenue stream.

So far creating T-Shirts has been on my radar. Quite a bit strangely. I mean I have FlockHosting/Thrust Networks to work on the continued growth and expansion of the brand, but still creating has been a big desire for me lately.

I see customers making money, I see others making money, and while this year my revenues are up from last, I would like more security in my revenue stream. Right now a handful of customers haven’t paid or “the checks in the mail” and with Holiday shipping, I bet it is… somewhere.

I want to build. I want to create. Shirts would give me that option, but I think the thing is with marketing, I’m afraid to be annoying. LOL

What I mean by that and I think the same goes for FlockHosting and Thrust Networks is I am not one to create a fuss. No reason to blast weekly about my services, there is no need to make 30 posts about features, functions, promotional options because honestly? I block them too. I don’t like annoying people with offers.

I recently watched a short webinar on using one T-Shirt design platform in which they said if I did their tactics I could easily be making $20,000 a month. I don’t know about you but making $240,000 in a year, I could eliminate my debt, build up savings, and heck I could hire someone to do a lot of my heavy lifting.

Now do I honestly think that I could make $20,000/month? I don’t believe it. Even if I did spam Facebook Groups, promote on Google, Amazon, etc. I still think I’d be more in the realm of a job as then a Part Time Designer / Full Time Marketer. I haven’t slept well in a month, adding that sounds like it’d kill me!

Lots to consider, lots to layout if I want to make it happen. For now, going to take a short break, stretch my legs and chill out for a bit.

PS:13 – Product Manager

So I’ve had a talk moving forward on my job offer. It sounds great. Still not all the specifics as of yet like things in the pay, benefits, etc. but very light ground work laying out for me what I would do.

I don’t mind the 9-to-5 job. It is nice to work with a crew and build something. I worked as the “IT Director” for a lab supply company for five years, before that I was the “eCommerce Guy” for a growing web firm, before that I was “IT Coordinator” for a High School Design Acadameny. Each has had it’s perks to it which have been nice.

This company has been awesome to work for as a contractor, and my brother works at this company too but has been insanely hands off, even to the point that I report to other people. I’ve even had the CEO hit me up and pick my brain even to the point he had me migrate a family members website to his servers.

So 9-to-5 solid, some options for bonuses based upon some factors if I can grow things for them (shouldn’t be too hard) and no conflict in working my own thing! Though moving forward some of my client base, if things seem solid, I may consider just bringing them into the fold.

I’ve been in and out today, but trying to keep with the post something every day, I’m up for a short bit – so here’s my post! Hopefully, this next week I’ll have a firm offer, heck even an active new job.

PS:10 – A Job?

A 9-to-5ish kind of job? Maybe.

I got a note Monday night from the company I do a lot of contract work for and they asked if I’d be interested in coming on full time as a “Web Engineer” (not even sure what that means lol) but I like the idea.

I love doing my gig; it’s fun. I have had 13 years of doing it, and even as I worked previously at another company for around five years, it can be done.

The cool thing, this time, around is it is in my field. Web/Servers. I have been working for them as a contractor for a few months, and I’ve enjoyed the crew, and helping out a new dynamic of customers.

So I’ve said I’m interested, and they are getting me a job description and call by weeks end. This could be a good thing, or a bad thing, or a good, bad thing. Time will tell 🙂

Hopefully, in a few posts, I’ll have something more to say!
